NEWSWIRE: Patriots Down Bengals 23 - 13

It's only one game, and it's only an exhibition one at that, but Patriots fans are clamoring for rookie signal caller Matt Cassel. The former USC Trojan led the Patriots to four scoring drives securing a 23-13 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in last night's preseason opener.

We're not going to jump on the Cassel bandwagon quite yet, but to say the rookie outshined a 4th year vet (Rohan Davey) in the Patriots first test of 2005, is an understatement. Sure Davey played against better players with the Bengals using their starters during his time in the game, but the consistency problems that have haunted Davey in camp, continue.

Cassel on the other hand has shown the poise he displayed in camp, leading the Patriots down the field multiple times to put points on the board. Cassel who looked sharp in his two-minute drill in Foxboro, demonstrated it wasn't just his charm and good looks he used to lead the team downfield.

Today's newswire has a number of good takes on the game, including a look at rookie Logan Mankins first outing.

More reports to follow throughout the day.
