Poore's Picks: Week One

Patriots Insider is pleased to provide the second installment of Poore's Picks, a weekly pick'em column. Picking the games each and every week, Jim lays his record out for all to see, mull over and rip apart come gameday. Readers may be familiar with his work on other networks. Here are Poore's Picks for Week One in the 2005 NFL football season.

Poore's Picks: Week One
By Jim Poore

Finally the 2005 NFL season is about to begin. Now we will see who all of the pretenders are, which teams step it up a notch, and which teams should really not even be allowed on the field. During the first few weeks of the NFL season, winners are hard to determine when picking against the spread. There are some key injuries to start the season, and it takes some teams a couple of weeks to get into a rhythm. In other words, yours truly is already trying to come up with some excuses, just in case his picks do not work out as originally planned. However, that is not the plan, although there will be some occasions when a pick will be made incorrectly.

This is a big week for this writer; if I start off well, there will be legions of fans. If our record falls to 2-15 after week one, then that is an entirely different story altogether. Without further delay, here are Poore's Picks for week one, including an upset special of the week (there will be upset special every week). Games are listed in no particular order, and the home team will always be in CAPS.

NEW ENGLAND 7 1/2 Oakland

The Patriots look to defend their title again, and after losing two coordinators to other teams. Hollywood Tom Brady is back, and most experts feel this is all the Patriots will need in order to win the Super Bowl again. I am not so sure, but the Patriots will once again be very good. The Raiders are a different story. Someone needs to tell Kerry Collins that he cannot throw a football with a beer in his hand. Actually, I'm not so sure he can throw without the beer. Randy Moss will be a huge addition; I just wish he would get a new hairdo. The Patriots should win fairly easily, but the Raiders aren't that bad. I don't expect a Patriots blowout like some do.

Poore's Pick: Patriots 27-16

Denver 4 1/2 MIAMI

For whatever reason, I have a feeling that this is not the only game this year where Miami will be the underdog. I think they will be underdogs to the bye week when that approaches. Denver, as usual, is not great, but could be pretty good. Miami will not be, though Nick Saban seems to be doing a pretty good job of keeping spirits high. Oh wait. That's Ricky Williams' job. Either way, I have a feeling the Fins are going to come out a play a pretty good game. I don't think they will win, but they will keep it close.

Poore's Pick: Broncos 23-20

Cincinnati 3 1/2 CLEVELAND

I actually like the Bengals this year. There is a chance that they might even play in the postseason. All you need to know about the Cleveland Browns is this: Trent Dilfer is their starting quarterback. That is one reason why the Browns will be underdogs most weeks. New coach Romeo Crennel actually has them headed in the right direction. It just might take them a couple of years to get there. If Kellen Winslow could stop riding his bicycle, then maybe he would play one year. Or month. Or day. Or game.

Poore's Pick: Bengals 30-17

BUFFALO 5 1/2 Houston

J.P. Losman was supposedly a me-me-me guy at Tulane. If he is like that in Buffalo, he isn't going to last long. Houston is clearly a team on the rise, but they might be another year away at least. The Bills do have an awesome defense; it is just that their offensive line is just that, offensive. That is their biggest question mark. Houston's main problem is youth. It is just a matter of timer before these "kids" become seasoned veterans. Still, the Bills are the pick at home, but the Texans could be a team to watch later in the year.

Poore's Pick: Bills 23-16

PITTSBURGH 7 1/2 Tennessee

The Steelers should have another very good season, but for some reason thay can't get to the Super Bowl. Once Ben Roethlisberger really matures, then the Steelers might make the Promised Land. Losing Plaxico Burress isn't going to help Big Ben, but the Steelers do always have a good defense. The Titans just might be the worst team in the AFC. They got ravaged by free agency two years ago, and have not found a way to recover. I can't remember the last time Steve McNair played more then three games in a row. The Steelers cover easily here.

Poore's Pick: Steelers 28-10

WASHINGTON 6 Chicago

I am not even sure that anybody is going to watch this game. Except for nerd Daniel Snyder, I am not sure anyone cares either. Joe Gibbs should have stuck to the racetrack. The game is clearly behind him. It has to be. He can't even decide on a quarterback. Snyder continues to spend, spend, spend and gets nothing in return. He won't this year either. As for Da Bears, they might be one of the worst teams in the NFC. That, of course, means they will be playoff contenders to the very end in that conference. Take the Redskins here, but very cautiously.

Poore's Pick: Redskins 20-13

CAROLINA 7 1/2 New Orleans

These Carolina Panthers are for real. If they didn't have all of the injuries last year, fans would have noticed then. If the Panthers can stay healthy, they could be a very dangerous team. As for the Saints, all of their home games will now be away due to the hurricane. And that can't help. They are only going to be mediocre at best, and it is still a wonder to me how Jim Haslett is still the coach there. If the team bombs this year, he won't be.

Poore's Pick: Panthers 28-13

MINNESOTA 6 Tampa Bay

I have a feeling that the Vikings are not going to miss Randy Moss. They still have Daunte Culpepper, possibly the most dangerous quarterback in the game. And their defense should be better, with the addition of some solid free agents. If the receivers can step up, the Vikings could make a run for the Super Bowl. That, however, is not something the Bucs are going to be doing. They might not even run onto the field. This might be one of the worst Tampa teams in years. I have a pretty good feeling the ship in the end zone section might not be making a lot of noise this year.

Poore's Pick: Vikings 38-17

JACKSONVILLE 3 Seattle

I see all over that the Jaguars are supposed to be good this season. Somehow I just don't see it. They were pretty decent last year, but they didn't have any big signings during the free agency period. If they played in the NFC it might be a different story. The Seahawks are a different story, of course, because they are a different team. How many chances is Mike Holmgren going to get? I have asked this question several times and I still have not gotten an answer. Maybe I need to go to a higher authority and not my mailman. Seattle could pull the mild upset here, but I think being at home will make the difference for the Jags.

Poore's Pick: Jaguars 24-20

KANSAS CITY 3 New York Jets

The Chiefs actually did do some upgrading to their defense this year, so now they will only allow 1,003 points instead of 1100. Their offense is still strong, and they will score a lot of points. If they win this game, we just might see Dick Vermeil crying. Again. As for the Jets, they will be very good. It is amazing that Curtis Martin continues to run at the pace he does. But he has to tire sometime. And Chad Pennington should be healthy for the start of the season. I have seen some people pick the Jets to win the AFC East. I wouldn't go quite that far.

Poore's Pick: Chiefs 37-30

NEW YORK GIANTS 2 1/2 Arizona

The Giants did virtually nothing in the free agency period, and they only had a limited number of draft picks. Wait a minute? They signed Plaxico Burress? Like I said, the Giants did virtually nothing in the offseason, and that isn't going to help Eli Manning develop any better. This could be a long season at the Meadowlands. As for the Cardinals, they have two things going for them right now. They play in the NFC West, and their younger players have looked really good. Kurt Warner isn't the gunslinger of old, but I think he might want to exact some revenge on the team that cut him loose. This is my upset special of the week. A mild upset, but an upset nonetheless.

Poore's Pick: Cardinals 26-23

St. Louis 5 SAN FRANCISCO

I will say this right now. The 49ers are the worst team in the NFL. Unfortunately, that isn't original because everyone else is saying it too. And Mike Nolan says his team is going to win the division? I know the NFC West sucks, but let's not get stupid here. The Rams, of course are going to score a million points, while clueless Mike Martz stands on the sidelines. This guy is arguably the worst head coach in the NFL. And the Rams really aren't going to be that good. But playing in the NFC West is they only cure they need.

Poore's Pick: Rams 30-6

DETROIT 3 Green Bay

This is clearly Joey Harrington's last shot to be the Lions' quarterback. The Lions could be the only team in NFL history to have one quarterback and 10 wide receivers on every play. That is if they can all stay healthy. And if they do, the Lions could be a very interesting team. The Packers clearly are not the Packers of old. They are just old. Brett Favre seems to throw more interceptions then touchdowns nowadays, and the defense is a little soft. I like the Lions in this game.

Poore's Pick: Lions 26-13

SAN DIEGO 4 1/2 Dallas

The Chargers could be looking real good this year. It is hard to tell though if Drew Brees had a breakout year, or if it was a flash in the pan. I think it is the former. And as long as LaDainian Tomlinson is healthy, that could be all the Chargers need this year to win their division. The Cowboys will be no slouches either, as Bill Parcells has slowly molded a very good defense. The offense should be better too, as long as Drew Bledsoe has time to throw and the line stays upright. If it does, the Cowboys should be able to score some points with some pretty decent wide receivers. This is one of the better games for week one. Take the Chargers being at home.

Poore's Pick: Chargers 27-20

Indianapolis 3 BALTIMORE

We all know how good the Colts are going to be, and their defense should be improved. Whether it is enough to take them to the Super Bowl is the big mystery right now. The Ravens have some new wide receivers, and there shouldn't be any worry about more jail time for Jamal Lewis. Kyle Boller has got to step up if the Ravens are going to be contenders. If he does, the Ravens could very well make some noise throughout the season. Take the Colts here though simply because they are the better team.

Poore's Pick: Colts 41-28

Philadelphia 1 ATLANTA

I am going to say this right here and now, so I can get it off my chest. Can someone, anyone please explain to me why Michael Vick is considered so good? When you look at the word overrated in the dictionary, Vick's picture is right there. I don't dislike him, and I think once he becomes more of a pocket passer, he can be very good. Just not now people ok? Donovan McNabb, on the other hand, is exceptional. Hopefully he and Terrell Owens can learn to get along. If they can, the Eagles season could last well into January.

Poore's Pick: Eagles 23-21

Last week's record: (preseason) 0-5 It doesn't count, just like the games!
Record after week one: Hopefully 16-0
