FOXBOROUGH - The New England Patriots acquired another running back on Friday, free agent Michael Cloud. The spate of injuries forced the Patriots to invite in a number of free agent running backs, including Cloud, to Gillette Stadium for a workout this week.
The seven-year veteran Cloud began his career with the Kansas City Chiefs (1999-2002), then moved on to the Patriots (2003) and most recently, the New York Giants (2004). The 5-foot-10-inch, 205-pound back from Boston College played five games for the Patriots during the 2003 season.
Other backs that were given an opportunity to tryout for the team include Jesse Chatman, Olandis Gary, and Anthony Thomas.
To make room on the roster for Cloud, the team released veteran safety Arturo Freeman who was acquired to provide depth in an injury ravaged defensive secondary. The Patriots signed Freeman as a free agent on October 12, 2005. He played in two games for the Patriots this season, participating in eight tackles. The Miami Dolphins released Freeman in February after spending four seasons with the team (2000-2004).
