2006 Draft Prospect: Anthony Smith

The New England Patriots could use some help in the secondary that much is no secret. The last two seasons proved that the Patriots just never can have enough healthy defensive backs to make it through a season. One player who caught the eyes of scouts in attendance in Mobile at the Senior Bowl is a prospect from Syracuse. He sat down with Scout.com to talk about his future as a football player in the NFL.

New England's injury woes may lead them to take a look at defensive backs who have the ability to play a number of positions in the secondary. One such prospect is a free safety from the Big East who has quickness and the vision necessary to make big plays against top talent in college. Whether that can translate into the skills necessary to make it in the NFL is yet to be determined. With the Patriots potentially losing three safeties this offseason, a late round pick spent on this player could pay dividends down the road.

Anthony Smith earned the 2005 Syracuse University football Bill Horr Most Valuable Player Award for his play on the field as a senior.

Smith, a 2005 first-team All-BIG EAST selection, had six interceptions, which tied for second in the nation, and 14 passes defended, which tied for 12th nationally.

He ranks third on the Orange's all-time interceptions list with 14 and his six picks this year is the most by an SU defender since 1995. Smith was the team's third-leading tackler with 71 stops. He also had three sacks, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and one blocked kick.

Smith will see his sock rise or fall depending on how he fares during the pro day, individual workouts and the NFL combine scheduled to begin this week. Being on draft boards, even as a late round pick is no guarantee for the former Orangemen.

After meeting with members of a number of teams at the Senior Bowl, including the Atlanta Falcons, Smith sat down to talk to Scout.com. He spoke about a number of topics, including winning MVP honors at Syracuse, the nuances of playing safety and Senior Bowl week.
