Departing seniors, former players, coaches, scouts and even a handful of current Cardinals made up a sizeable crowd inside U of L's Trager Center on Monday as the school held it's annual Pro Day.
30 of the 32 NFL franchises were on hand to get a closer look at a number of Cardinals hoping to make the type of impression that might land them a spot on an NFL roster. Montavious Stanley, Jason Spitz, Montrell Jones, Travis Leffew, Jeremy Darveau, Joshua Tinch, Brandon Johnson and Antoine Sharp were among those putting their abilities on display.
"This workout means a great deal for me and guys like me," said Antoine Sharp following some individual work with a few scouts representing the Cincinnati Bengals. "I'm trying to impress one of the teams out here, so it's really big for me."
After watching six Cardinals having their name called in last year's NFL Draft, all of this year's hopeful rookies performed well on Monday, including receiver Montrell Jones, who was timed with a sub 4.4 40-yard run.
"I feel great," said Jones. "I've received good feedback from the scouts and things like that, so I feel real comfortable with my workout today."
Offensive lineman Jason Spitz, who turned in a strong performance at the recent NFL Combine in Indianapolis, felt that he improved his stock during Monday's workouts.
"It went very well," said Spitz. "I think at the combine I couldn't have asked for better drill work and I feel that I did pretty good today too, so I think I helped myself out a little bit."
All credited U of L head coach Bobby Petrino's approach to preparation throughout the year as an advantage when it came time to perform certain drills requested by the numerous scouts on hand.
"I feel like Coach Petrino and the staff have done a great job getting the guys ready somewhat indirectly for a pro day or a combine, because we do these drills every day," said Sharp.
For most, like local product Montrell Jones, the opportunity to display their talent to NFL scouts is yet another step in fulfilling a lifelong dream.
"It's something that I have been waiting for all my life," Jones explained. "I prepared well for today and I'm happy with my results."
Hopefully each of their dreams of playing professional football will continue when they are drafted during the April 29-30 draft or sign a free agent contract shortly thereafter.
