For the second straight year, PatriotsInsider.com is proud to present the Mock Draft Muncher, another free service of Patriots Insider.
The Mock Draft Muncher takes dozens of mock drafts scattered around the web and analyzes them to generate the consensus of the mock drafts and also to spot trends in the thinking of "draftniks" in the NFL world as draft weekend (April 29-30th) approaches.
Born out of the passion of fans who spent countless hours obsessing over the selections in the Draft, the Mock Draft Muncher has been advanced the last couple of years with the addition of Flash-based trend charting. It now includes full access to the originating mocks on the original sites. New mock drafts can be entered and analyzed quickly, making it possible for us to smush over four dozen mocks into the MDM machine.
This season, the Muncher has shown that experts originally had no real consensus over who the Patriots would select, but have recently begun to converge on Bobby Carpenter, the linebacker out of Ohio State. Carpenter and his fellow Buckeye's had their pro day recently, which was well attended by NFL scouts, coaches and front office personnel.
At the end of February, the Patriots were projected to select defensive back Ashton Youboty. Just about two weeks later, Carpenter has seen his stock rise and has moved into contention with Youboty and another defensive back Tye Hill.
While part of this is due to Carpenter's projected ability and perceived readiness for the next level, it could very well be explained by the possible departure of OLB Willie McGinest who was unable to negotiate a new deal before being released by the team. While Carpenter and Youboty have seen their stock level off or remain fairly consistent, other players have seen their stock drop quickly. One example is Vince Young (trend chart), who started as a #2 pick in our analysis, and now averages out between pick four and pick five in most mock drafts. Young's reported low Wonderlic scores and decision not work out at the combine have worked against him. Another player showing a steady drop is Alabama outside linebacker DeMeco Ryans (trend chart).
There are a lot of different things to see on the many Mock Draft Muncher pages. Enjoy!
