Transcript: 4/27 Draft chat with Tony Pauline

Chat Transcript for those who were unable to attend the Draft Chat with guest Tony Pauline from last night. Tony answered questions for close to an hour about the Draft, some players that the team is targeting, and some sleepers he sees out there.

<JSinCT>

The first question is have you heard any rumbling about trades so far?

<TFYDraft>

JS..trade..here we go. The Packers are looking to trade Javon Walker to Denver and get a third team involved. That third team was suppose to be the Eagles

The Bronco's wanted a second for Ashlie Lelie from the Eagles. The Eagles offered a fifth round pick Hence that trade is stalled right now.

<K1770PW>

I've been hearing Javon Walker trade rumors all day. How much of it is true?

<Morpheus11>

How much of a chance do the Patriots have at getting Javon Walker?

<TFYDraft>

Have not heard the Pats are involved

<Morpheus11>

Is it true he is meeting with Denver and Philly today and perhaps the Patriots tomorrow?

<Morpheus11>

What are the Patriots chances at him Tony? I heard he may possibly be meeting with the Patriots tomorrow

<TFYDraft>

Have not heard that...that is cutting it very close

<K1770PW>

That's what I thought, Tony. We could have traded for him long ago, why now?

<JSinCT>

ESPN's Michael Smith had a piece on it recently speculating that the Patriots may be involved. More has been on the talk shows recently as well.

<TFYDraft>

Now...we did report a month ago that the Pats are very interested in Chad Jackson and will move up if he starts to fall

<HuNowsY>

What would you consider him "falling" Is it past 15 at the broncos?

<K1770PW>

Wow, J do they like him that much. Is he that good?

<TFYDraft>

Hunows.... the Bronco's are likely to go DE...right now falling means past the Fish...they'd need to get in front of the Chargers, who love him

<DisplacedPatsFan>

Do the Pats still feel the same about Jackson?

<JSinCT>

That's the word. Tony is more familiar with Jackson's college career, but he is impressing a lot of people with his interviews and workouts

<TFYDraft>

JS.... Jackson is a superior athlete with great upside. He needs to improve his fundamentals and learn to attack the ball when catching it...the history of UF wide outs is also not good

<Morpheus11>

Do the Patriots love Jackson more than the WR from Ohio St?

<TFYDraft>

Morph… I heard Jackson for a while now...Holmes does not have the size they want

<Morpheus11>

What is the Patriots interest in ""baby TO"" the kid from Central Florida?

<TFYDraft>

Morph....Brandon Marshall has been moving up boards after his recent workouts...he ran significantly faster then anyone thought. That said, he's a long way from being TO- not as explosive nor a game breaker. More a possession wide out

<JSinCT>

Tony one question recently on some of the defenders who visited. Is Tye Hill really an option for the Patriots or are other teams targeting him in your opinion?

<TFYDraft>

JS- they'd love to get Hill...they want a corner early and Hill is the best pure corner in this draft- one of the most underrated players in this draft to my mind

<HuNowsY>

Would they take Chad Jackson over Hill?

<TFYDraft>

HuNows...unlikely- I think they go with Hill

<K1770PW>

Tony you don't think that his size would be a problem?

<K1770PW>

I also heard that he has bad hands and is not a good tackler.

<Morpheus11>

Better than the kid from FL.St Cromartie?

<TFYDraft>

K1770- not size but lack of height...let's be serious though- would you give up on Hill because he's 5-9.5??

<K1770PW>

NO, not at all. It was the bad tackling report I read today that bothers me.

<Morpheus11>

Would you say that Hill is better than Cromartie? Cromartie has the size we need in the DB

<TFYDraft>

Morpheus.... right now? Yes…two years down the road

<HuNowsY>

that's true, I just read an article that compared taller CB to smaller ones and said they don't really last that long because they cant really keep up with some of the more athletic WR in the league

<TFYDraft>

Two years down the road Cromartie could be better

<K1770PW>

What about Richard Marshall?

<TFYDraft>

K1770...I love Richard Marshall myself but don't think I'd take him in the first round...the first round of '07 had he stayed in school...a lot of upside but will need some work before he breaks into a starting line-up

<K1770PW>

I really like that kid. But I don't think that he will be there in the second. He'll probably be off the board very early in the second round.

<TFYDraft>

K1770...he's a top 42 choice

<Morpheus11>

What about Bing? You have him over rated and his stock is said to be dropping. Who do you like in place of Bing for the Pat's?

<TFYDraft>

Morpheus...not a Pats' type of player...people are split as to whether or not Bing will be a S or LB

<K1770PW>

Tony, do the Pats like Bobby Carpenter enough to select him at 21?

<TNPatsFan>

Would the pats trade up for Wimbley? And how far up would they be willing to go?

<TFYDraft>

K1770...possibly...also- they love Kamerion Wimbley- if he is available they'd jump on him to replace Wimbley

<HuNowsY>

Are the Patriots looking at any inside linebackers in the mid to later rounds?

<HuNowsY>

Are the Patriots looking at any inside linebackers in the mid to later rounds?

<HuNowsY>

im thinking Freddie roach or maybe even Kai, i think i asked this last time though

<TFYDraft>

HuNows...ILB's they like ...Tim McGarigle and Abdul Hodge...very good selections

<Morpheus11>

So Tony you think the Pat's will select a DB or WR at 21 with Wimbley a possibility if he is there

<Guest6>

Who will make the better third-down back? Leon Washington or Jerome Harrison?

<TFYDraft>

Guest6.... tough call on the 3rd down back...I like Washington as I think he will also develop as a RS/punt returner

<HuNowsY>

dont they normally go for 250 lb linebackers?

<Morpheus11>

Would that be good value to select Hodge at 21?

<Morpheus11>

I though that was high for Hodge

<TFYDraft>

Morpheus...no Hodge in round three...maybe two. No ILB in the 1st

<Guest6>

Am I reading too much into the fact that the Jets, Pats, and Browns all were interested in Chris Gocong? What about him makes him such a good fit for the Belichick 3-4?

<TFYDraft>

Guest...proto-typical 'tweener; great explosion, playing speed and intensity...goes very hard

<HuNowsY>

I just took another look at Abdul Hodge's size. He doesn't seem to fit their mold of ILB

<TNPatsFan>

I love Hodge, but yeah his size is a concern

<TFYDraft>

HuNows...they like his versatility...can play OLB or leave him on the field on 3rd and 7/8/9

<JSinCT>

Is that the same issue with D'Qwell Jackson... undersized?

<TFYDraft>

JS...undersized and mostly a two-down defender who can't cover

<Morpheus11>

Do you think the Pat's will leave the draft with a McGinest type of player, if so whom?

<TFYDraft>

Morpheus...as previously stated, they love Wimbley Jeremy Mincey in round four could also fill that role

<K1770PW>

Tony, how serious do you think the Pats are about selecting a RB in this draft?

<K1770PW>

Who are they interested in?

<TFYDraft>

K1770...very in the later rounds...they won't take DeAngelo Williams from what we've heard...I think a guy like Mike Bell later on is a good fit

<Morpheus11>

Tell us about Mike Bell please

<TFYDraft>

Solid size on the inside, good vision...has the ability to grind it out.

<Morpheus11>

So you say that Mincey could fill the role just as good as Wimbley?

<TFYDraft>

Morpheus...no. Not as good but he has potential at that spot

<K1770PW>

Tony-Interesting. I thought that D. Williams would be a good fit. But there is something about that kid that I just don't like.

<Morpheus11>

Can Bell get to the outside consistently... We need a back with the ability to get outside and turn the corner

<TFYDraft>

Morpheus...does not do a bad job cutting the corner but not beating anyone in a foot race

<TNPatsFan>

Is that the guy they like? What other second day backs are they looking at?

<TFYDraft>

TNPatsfan...I've heard there is interest in PJ Daniels of Ga Tech though they are concerned about the injury history

<Morpheus11>

Who would you compare bell to that is playing

<JSinCT>

They also took a close look at Maurice Drew and Laurence Maroney. Are either of them a possibility Tony?

<TFYDraft>

JS...unlikely Maroney in round one...Drew would be a solid choice in two

<HuNowsY>

Tony, there was a lot of interest in O Lineman earlier in the year, during the Senior Bowl. The Pats seemed to be interested in McNeill, Eric Winston, Winston Justice, Charles Spencer, Ryan cook, et al. Are they still interested in O Linemen, or has their interest died down a little

<HuNowsY>

Where can you see them drafting some OLine help?

<TFYDraft>

HuNows...has died down in the early part of the draft...the top guys have injury concerns...a versatile guy like Jason Spitz C/G from Louisville is a consideration in day two

<JSinCT>

Spitz and his workout partner Chris Morris (MSU) worked out /met with the team. Is Morris a late day grab or more of a UDFA?

<TFYDraft>

JS...UDFA...the center crop is terrible and really thins out after the top three/four guys

<JSinCT>

Tony, I know time is limited and wanted to ask a couple general questions emails sent in.

<TFYDraft>

JS...sure

<JSinCT>

Do you see a lot of potential moves in the top 10 in this draft?

<TFYDraft>

JS...no; there is always the talk of all kinds of trades in the top ten...why move up for Broderick Bunkley when you can get Haloti Ngata?? It is a deep draft

<JSinCT>

Will the Patriots package their picks to move around to get the guys they need, like we're hearing or...?

<TFYDraft>

JS- if a player they target (Chad Jackson/K Wimbley) starts to slip...but I don't expect them to make a major move

<JSinCT>

Your favorite lesser-known names that may open some eyes in the league? ie... sleeper picks

<TFYDraft>

JS..Willie Colon/G/Hofstra.... Jeff Mroz/QB/Yale

<TFYDraft>

Quinton Ganther/RB/Utah as well

<Morpheus11>

what are your sleeper CB's and WR's?

<TFYDraft>

CB's.... Derrick Martin/Wyoming...Dion Byrum/Ohio...

<TFYDraft>

WR's...not many it is a crappy class...Felton Huggins of SW La...Joshua Tinch of Louisville

<JSinCT>

That's it for my Q's... floor's open

<HuNowsY>

have the pats shown any interest in Bernard pollard. and what is your opinion on him

<JSinCT>

Hu... he is on the visitor/workout list

<TFYDraft>

HuKnows...Pollard is a run defending safety...he is also a character problem and not a well liked guy..not a Pats guy

<TNPatsFan>

Will the pats draft a tight end? i really like this kid Jeff king from Virginia tech as a late pick to replace Fauria. Any thoughts on him?

<TFYDraft>

TNPatsfan...I love King as well but he's different from Fauria...better blocker not as much a playmaking pass catcher

<TNPatsFan>

do the pats like Daniel Bullocks, S, Nebraska? When will he be picked?

<JSinCT>

Bullocks... on the visitor list TN

<TFYDraft>

TNPatsfan...yes but Bullocks is very late first/early second

<JSinCT>

Top 3 priorities that you think the Patriots will address in the draft?

<Morpheus11>

What are the top 3 priorities you feel the Patriots will address in the draft and who are the players you project to fill the needs

<TFYDraft>

Morph...CB/RB/LB

<DisplacedPatsFan>

Do the Pats plan on drafting a kicker at all?

<TFYDraft>

Displaced...no kickers worth drafting this weekend

<TFYDraft>

Huge articles coming and major injuries/off the field concerns with some of the player from the draft

<TFYDraft>

Actually the article will be up tomorrow morning

<TFYDraft>

also...big value board up tomorrow
