They Need is Luck

Everything is in place for the Patriots to repeat as Super Bowl champions. The boys on the Wheaties box -- quarterback Tom Brady, safety Lawyer Milloy, running back Antowain Smith, receiver Troy Brown and linebacker Roman Phifer -- will all be back. The best coach in the league, Bill Belichick, will be at the helm. Even a possible rookie of the year -- tightend Daniel Graham -- will be on the team.
The one missing ingredient could be luck. Serendipity was with the Pats last season. After the terror attacks of Sept. 11, it just seemed appropriate for a team called the Patriots to win the Super Bowl.
All championship seasons are marked by good fortune. Lady luck sure blessed the Pats last year. Just take a look at the AFC semifinal against Oakland, a nail-biter the Pats won by 16-13 in overtime. Maybe the luckiest moment came when Brady seemingly fumbled the ball on a crucial scoring drive. The referees looked at the replay and
reversed themselves, calling it an incomplete pass. And how lucky can you get? The Raiders, a sunshine team, were forced to play in the first, and maybe the worst, New England snow storm of last winter. Or how about when Jerome Wiggins caught a Brady pass in the snow that rebounded off a fellow Patriot? That play saved the season for the Pats.
That was only one game.
The whole season turned on luck. When Drew Bledsoe was knocked to the sidelines in game two against the Jets, Brady stepped in. And then how sweet was it when the former all pro, Bledsoe, took over in the AFC championship game when Brady was injured? Bledsoe immediately went three for three through the air, capping the first half drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass and a 14-3 lead for the Pats. If Brady is injured this year, Damon Huard will be the backup.
Speaking of injuries, the Wheaties five played virtually free of injuries last year. Will that happen again? The Pats could field the most skilled players this season. Let's just hope they are the luckiest, too.
