Patriots Sign DB/KR Willie Andrews

The New England Patriots signed defensive back / kick returner Willie Andrews yesterday. Andrews was the team's seventh-round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft ( 229th overall). He is the first member of the 2006 NFL Draft class to reach an agreement with the team.

A former defensive back and kick returner at Baylor, the 5-foot-9, 195-pound Andrews participated in both activities during the team's recent June minicamp. An All-American candidate in 2004, Andrews earned All Big-12 honors for his return duties in both 2004 and 2005. He completed his collegiate career having started 34 of 46 games, amassing a record of 219 tackles, 8.5 sacks, three interceptions and 13 passes defended. He set school records for kickoff returns (67), kickoff return yards (1,647) and punt return yards (949).

The Patriots were one of a number of teams to not have signed any of their draft selections up till yesterday. With Andrews in the fold the team has nine more players to sign from the 2006 Draft class.

TFY Draft Preview had this as their Scouting report on Andrews:

Bio: Three-year starter handed All-Conference honors the past two seasons. Senior totals included 59/3/4. Posted 67/0/3 as a junior with a 10.8-yard average on punts.

Pos: Explosive defensive back who displays speed in every direction. Tough, works to get involved and flies around the ball. Flashes skill in coverage and positions himself to make plays on the ball.

Neg: Undersized, runs around blocks and does not always play under control.

Analysis: Possessing solid size/speed numbers for the secondary, Andrews is a dime back for the next level with potential as a return specialist.
