FB/TE Garrett Mills (4th-round, 106th overall) has reached an agreement with the Patriots. Scout.com is reporting that the deal could be signed early next week.
Mills, 22, set school and NCAA records as a receiver at Tulsa. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound FB/TE amassed 201 receptions for 2,389 yards and 23 touchdowns in his career -- third most receptions in school history. His 87 receptions for 1,235 yards set a single-season NCAA Division 1A record for most yards in a season by a tight end. Mills started 33 of 50 games played while at Tulsa and held the longest current consecutive streak of receptions among tight ends in the nation at 40.

Mills is the team's fourth tight end joining veterans Ben Watson, Dan Graham and fellow rookie David Thomas at the position. A unique athletic ability affords Mills the opportunity to work at the fullback position as well, in a hybrid type of role. The team has officially listed Mills at both positions -- FB at minicamp and TE on the team roster. It is expected if he makes the final roster that he will fulfill the duties of an H-back, lining up in the backfield and occasionally running patterns.
The Patriots have 10 draft picks to sign and an estimated $15 million to work with before the rookie contracts are factored in. Note that the contract negotiation with WR Deion Branch continue, and any new deal reached with the veteran could affect those numbers. Branch is in the final year of his rookie contract.
