Patriots Insider has learned that Hank Poteat signed with the New York Jets on August 31st. Poteat, who filled in for the Patriots during parts of the past two seasons, was released by New England in thier first round of roster cuts on Tuesday August 29th.
Poteat first joined New England January 10, 2005 during the team's postseason run. He filled in on the team's secondary playing in each of the Patriots' postseason games.
Poteat was released after the 2004 season but later rejoined New England in the middle of the 2005 campaign.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Pittsburgh product hoped to continue playing in new England, but was caught in a numbers game with other versatile defenders. In New York Poteat is reunited with former Patriots' defensive coordinator and current Jets head coach Eric Mangini. Mangini was the Patriots secondary caoch in 2004, and helped Poteat get prepared to play in a Patriots defense that had resorted to using wide receiver Troy Brown as one of the team's defenders.
