The New England Patriots defeated the New York Jets Sunday afternoon. The Patriots relied on a scoreless fourth quarter drive to seal the victory. The Jets had 91 yards to go and only 1:05 to do it in after Jet's linebacker Jonathan Vilma blocked rookie kicker Stephen Gostkowski' field goal.
Running Backs Shine
Veteran running back Corey Dillon and rookied running back Laurence Maroney continued to show their explosive running as Dillon carried the ball 20 times for 60 yards with one touchdown and Maroney carried the ball 16 times for 65 yards plus his first NFL touchdown. Dillon was instrumental on the Patriots fourth quarter drive as he picked up a key first down on a 10 yard scramble.
Wide Receiver Chad Jackson Makes NFL Debut
Rookie wide receiver Chad Jackson has been out most of the pre season and practices with a hamstring injury. To the delight of the Patriot Nation, Jackson made his NFL debut in spectacular form with 2 catches for 42 yards and a touchdown. "It was a relief to just get in the game," said Jackson. "As a rookie, you never think you're going to get that much playing time but, at the same time, getting the catch and scoring a touchdown, that's a great feeling for me." Jackson is a possible replacement for departed wide receiver Deion Branch.
Patriots' defense key to victory
The Patriot's defense made the key play of the game in the fourth quarter, according to the Providence Journal. Jets's quarterback Chad Pennington was sacked by Mike Vrabel and Richard Seymour and the Jets had to settle for a field goal instead of a touchdown. The next series of plays for the Patriots saw a 16 play drive consuming almost nine minutes which capped the victory for the Patriots.
Patriot linebacker Tedy Bruschi returns
Patriot's linebacker Tedy Bruschi returned after a wrist injury kept him out of most of training camp. With his wrist still in a cast, Bruschi had 6 tackles (4 solo) and intercepted Pennington's last second pass to put the final nail in the coffin. Fellow linebacker Mike Vrabel said of Bruschi: "Only Tedy could come back with a cast on his stinking arm and get an interception." Bruschi added: "I felt good enough to go
It was nice playing again."
Bruschi has been considered the 'Heart and Soul' of Patriots. He came back last season after suffering a stroke and helped the Patriots make the playoffs. A report in the Patriots Insider summaries the career of Tedy Bruschi.
