Patriots Miss Out On Pair Of Free Agents

Scratch Two. A pair of free agent targets of the New England Patriots both opted to sign elsewhere today.

Two free agents who drew interest from the Patriots have both agreed to deals elsewhere. Free agent defensive tackle, Ian Scott (Bears), who was in Philadelphia for a visit after leaving the Patriots facility Wednesday, inked a deal with the Eagles, and free agent linebacker Ed Hartwell (Ravens) signed with the Bengals.

Hartwell, who drew significant interest from the Patriots in early March, has been the subject of much attention by Patriots fans. Hartwell agreed to terms with the Bengals today. His signing with Cincinnati was no surprise to insiders who heard that the free agent was leaning toward being reunited with his former defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis, who used to coach the Ravens defense when the two were in Baltimore together.

Scott was allowed to leave Chicago, according to BearReport.com, because he wasn't a good fit for the Lovie Smith defensive scheme. In Smith's scheme, the interior defensive linemen are required to put pressure on the quarterback, something Scott wasn't overly adept at doing. Considered a solid run-stuffer, the Patriots took an interest in the fifth-year pro.

The signings mean that New England is still looking for help at linebacker and defensive line via free agency or the waiver wire.
