Pats Notebook: Who looked good, who didn't

Quick hits from the practice field of Gillette Stadium. who stood out at Saturday's practice, for better or worse.

FOXBORO, Mass. – Football shared the stage with country music Saturday at Gillette Stadium, as Bill Belichick and company were treated to authentic crowd noise without having to pump it in.


-- Cornerback Chad Scott who injured his leg last evening in practice was listed as day-to-day by Coach Bill Belichick

-- Fellow cornerback Randall Gay said watching Scott go down "was real tough, especially knowing he is one of the hardest workers on the team, and on a play with no contact"

-- Brandon Meriweather is now wearing jersey number 31, which belonged to former defensive back Antwain Spann. Meriweather wsa wearing number 38 in minicamp.

Saturday practice observations:

Top Rookie Performance -- Defensive back Brandon Meriweather had an artful knockdown of a pass and showed his soft hands

Top Performance of the Day -- Running back Sammy Morris showed consistent explosion through the line of scrimmage and running free thereafter,

Top Play of the Day -- Kevin Faulk had the top play with a burst up the middle followed by some fancy footwork

Stock Is Dropping -- The stock is dropping on punter Tom Malone, who badly shanked a punt, while incumbent Josh Miller was booming kicks ... Linebacker Pierre Woods is struggling as he was relegated to running laps

Most Athletic Play of the Day -- Speaking of kickers, Stephen Gostkowski may have made the most athletic play when he caught a Miller punt one-handed with his left hand, while holding a football in his right hand, and he made it look easy

Notable Camp Battle -- Camp battles are heating up on the offensive line with Nick Kaczur battling Ryan O'Callaghan, and the now-deep receiving corps is sure to be worth watching when Troy Brown and Donte Stallworth return … On the subject of receivers, Kelvin Kight was front and center when he had four straight balls thrown to him, and he corralled three of them … Wes Walker and Ellis Hobbs were returning kickoffs in a session when Belichick directed the proceedings beside Gostkowski

Sightings -- Oklahoma University Head Coach Bob Stoops was reportedly on the practice field, along with some of his Sooner staff

Extra Credit -- Following in Tom Brady's rookie footsteps, Quarterback hopeful Matt Gutierrez was the last Patriot on the field long after practice ended, throwing passes and running sprints.
