FOXBORO, Mass. – Central Connecticut State running back Justise
Hairston has been acquired by the Patriots and placed on the reserve/injured
list. After receiving his release on Friday, the sixth round pick cleared waivers
over the weekend.
Hairston had to pass though waivers without another team claiming his rights. The Patriots' sixth-round pick was then acquired by New England and placed on the injured reserve list, ending his season.
The move was first reported by Scout.com's Adam Caplan, Friday night. According to Caplan, the team liked Hairston and wanted to retain him, but was forced to release him first due to a technicality in the timing of the move.
Although Hairston will miss the entire season, the Patriots felt strongly enough about his prospects to re-sign him for next season.
Hairston was selected by the Patriots in the sixth round (208th overall) in the 2007 NFL Draft. He attended the team's minicamps and OTAs, then was released at the start of training camp.
