Panthers vs. Eagles game notes

News and analysis on the Panthers' latest game against the Eagles, plus coverage as camp winds down.

--LB Thomas Davis was in on a sack of Donovan McNabb that helped take the Eagles out of field-goal range. Davis needs to step up and become a dominant linebacker for the Panthers this season if they're to take the next step.

--DE Otis Grigsby is making the best of his opportunities so far in the preseason. Granted his success continues to come against the opposition's third-team offense, but he had a sack for a second straight week and recorded a quarterback pressure on Eagles rookie QB Kevin Kolb.

--TE Jeff King had two catches for 23 yards and continues to show he might be able to handle the starting TE position for the Panthers. The only thing with King is he seems content to go to the ground after he makes the catch instead of trying to pick up more yardage.

--WR Taye Biddle is having a strong camp and early preseason. After catching two passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns last week against the Giants, Biddle sprang free for a 35-yard reception from QB David Carr in the fourth quarter.

--QB Jake Delhomme was terrible on Friday night against Philadelphia. Until his final drive of the first half, Delhomme had a quarterback rating of 2.7 and had a pass intercepted and returned 40 yards for a touchdown by CB Lito Sheppard. That was a horrible pass in the flat that should never have been thrown. That pick came one play after William James dropped a potential interception.

--SS Chris Harris was seemingly picked on early by Eagles QB Donovan McNabb. Harris gave up an 18-yard pass to third-string TE Brent Celek on a third-down play and was late in giving help to Chris Gamble on a 58-yard completion from McNabb to TE Matt Schobel.

--OT Jordan Gross surrendered a sack of Delhomme that resulted in a fumble and turnover in the first quarter. The offense in general struggled early on, netting just 31 total yards and one first down in the first quarter.

--OT Travelle Wharton struggled against the Eagles. He was called for a holding penalty after nearly taking off the head of Eagles DE Darren Howard on one pass rush. Had he not held up Howard's progress, Delhomme would have taken a big hit. Rookie OC Ryan Kalil also struggled in his first start.

--QB Brett Basanez's first pass against the Eagles was an interception. There is some question whether the Panthers might again keep just two quarterbacks this season and try to sneak Basanez on the practice squad. If they do that, they run the risk of someone else picking him up.
