The Patriots close out the preseason against the New York Giants for the third straight year. And they'll get reacquainted 17 weeks from now.
What's the goal of the final preseason game? Make the final decisions on roster moves and make sure no one gets hurt. To accomplish the second goal, the starters should end up playing no more than one series. Quarterback Tom Brady hasn't even played in the final preseason game in each of the last three seasons.
With twenty-two players to be cut between now and Saturday, playing time in tonight's game could be an indication of whether or not guys will make the team. If your favorite player is on the bubble, isn't hurt, and doesn't take the field tonight, you'd better find another jersey to wear on Sunday afternoon. On the other hand, if your guy plays -- and plays well -- you should feel good about his chances.
The roster will be cut to 53 on Saturday in preparation for the Patriots' season opener in the Meadowlands against their AFC East rival, the New York Jets. Tonight's tuneup against the Jets' stadium roommates will be the end of the line for some players, and the final action before the games that count begin for everyone else.
