Patriots Release Caldwell, Sign Rivers

FOXBORO, Mass. -- The New England Patriots announced that veteran wide receiver Reche Caldwell was released today. In addition tight end Marcellus Rivers was re-signed, rookie linebacker David Herron was claimed off of waivers from the Minnesota Vikings and seven players were added to the practice squad.

Caldwell Released

The New England Patriots released WR Reche Caldwell today. The move comes two days after a league-mandated round of roster cuts to comply with the 53-man roster limit rule.

The 6-foot, 210-pound receiver was signed by the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent March 17, 2006. He appeared in 16 games (14 starts) last year for the Patriots. He also started all three playoff games for New England.

Caldwell caught 61 passes for 760 yards and four touchdowns to lead all Patriots receivers in 2006. He has appeared in 63 with 28 starts since entering the league.

Caldwell played for the San Diego Chargers (2002-05) and the Patriots (2006).

Rivers Returns

In addition to Caldwell's release, the team re-signed tight end Marcellus Rivers. Rivers, who was acquired on August 7, 2007 during training camp, returns to the roster after being released on Saturday.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Oklahoma State product returns to fill a role on the team full of talented tight ends. Rivers fared well in preseason, and re-joins a talents lineup, which includes: Kyle Brady, Ben Watson and David Thomas.

Herron Picked Up Off Waivers

The Patriots claimed Minnesota Vikings linebacker David Harron off waivers the team announced today. Herron, released on Saturday as part of Minnesota's final round of roster cuts, and was eligible to be signed to the Vikings' practice squad. New England claimed the Michigan State product before he could clear waivers and signed him to the active roster.

The 6-foot-1, 245-pound linebacker signed with the Vikings as an undrafted rookie free in May, and was waived by the team on Saturday.

7 to the Practice Squad

In addition to the previous moves, the Patriots signed seven players to the practice squad.

WR Bam Childress, WR CJ Jones, DL Santonio Thomas, OL Clint Oldenburg and LB Corey Mays return to the team after passing through waivers.

FB Kyle Eckel returns to New England after having his contract terminated by Miami. Eckel was a member of the Patriots in 2005.

TE Jason Rader was signed after going through a tryout with the team on Friday August 31, 2007.
