Spann Promoted, Five Downgraded

The Patriots filled their open roster spot Friday by promoting Antwain Spann from the practice squad. Spann, a third-year reserve defender, sill fill the shoes of DB Willie Andrews who was ruled out for Saturday night's game as the Patriots attempt to go undefeated for the regular season against the New York Giants.

FOXBORO, Mass. -- The New England Patriots signed cornerback Antwain Spann to their active roster on Friday. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The Patriots created a roster spot for Spann by releasing veteran linebacker Chad Brown the day before. A free agent out of Louisiana-Lafayette, Spann is a third year defender who has spent time both the active roster and the Patriots practice squad. Originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Giants May 17, 2005, Spann joined the New England roster in 2006.

Spann, who had been a member of the Patriots practice squad since Sept. 25, will wear number 28 for the Patriots.

Injury Update:

The Patriots downgraded the playing status of five players to OUT for Saturday night's game against the Giants in the Meadowlands:

CB Willie Andrews (elbow)
TE Kyle Brady (foot)
FB Kyle Eckel (stomach)
T Nick Kaczur (foot)
G Stephen Neal (shoulder).

The team will need to designate up to three more players as inactive for the game to reach the 45-man limit. One player can be designated as the team's emergency quarterback: a role rookie Matt Gurierrez has held throughout the season.
