Patriots Cut Ties With Rosevelt Colvin, Lua

FOXBOROUGH -- The New England Patriots made two roster moves on Tuesday, cutting ties with a pair of linebackers; Rosevelt Colvin and Oscar Lua. Both players finished the 2007 season on Injured reserve. Colvin was scheduled to earn $5.5 million in 2008. Although they're gone, it's possible one, or both, could return.

Colvin Gone

The New England Patriots terminated the contract of veteran linebacker Rosevelt Colvin on Tuesday. Saddled with a $5.5 million salary and $7.6 million cap charge for a 30-year old pass rusher with a hurt foot, the Patriots did what they had to do, they cut him.

Colvin reportedly failed his year-end physical, which is what led to the roster move. It's possible he may return once he tests the market in free agency. If not, the 6-foot-3, 250-pound Perdue product could see significant attention from teams looking for an outside pass rush specialiat.

Colvin turned in four sacks and an interception to accompany his 28 tackles in the 10 games he started for the Patriots in 2007. He was placed on I/R after the Philadelphia game in late November. In 2006, Colvin was a force to be reckoned with on defense. He led the team with 8.5 sacks, while contributing 26 quarterback hits.

A fourth round pick (111th overall) by the Chicago Bear, Colvin spent four seasons with the NFC monsters of the midway (1999-2002) before joining the Patriots as a free agent.

Lua Waived

The Patriots also waived linebacker Oscar Lua on Tuesday. The 6-foot-1, 240-pound USC product was selected by the Patriots in the seventh round (211th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft. Lua was a fan favorite during his rookie training camp, often talking about wanting to play alongside veteran linebacker - and fellow USC Alum - Junior Seau. Lua's season ended with a knee injury in the preseason. He was placed on IR September 1, 2007.

Faulk Cited For Illegal Substance

Patriots' running back Kevin Faulk was cited for possession of marijuana in Lafayette, La. Last week. The Louisiana native was stopped and searched on his way to a suite at the Lafayette Cajundome. Faulk was attending a concert by musician Lil Wayne.

The Associated Press spoke with Capt. John Babin of the Lafayette Metro Narcotics Task Force, who confirmed Faulk was issued a misdemeanor summons for possession of four marijuana cigars - considered an amount suitable for personal use. The NFL star was not arrested.

"He was cited for simple possession, which is a misdemeanor," Babin told the AP. "There was no trouble, Kevin was very cooperative."

Faulk is the second New England player cited for possession of illegal substances. Defensive back Willie Andrews was arrestedfor possession of marijuana just days after the team's loss to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. Andrews pleaded not guilty to the charges. Police confiscated a half-pound of marijuana when Andrews' car was stopped in Lawrence Mass.
