RUMOR: Pats May Be Interested In Sartz who they looked closely at in 2007.
Buzz: Dallas Sartz is working out for teams now that he's recovered from a hamstring issue last year. Patriots VP of Player Personnel, Scott Pioli, was on hand to personally scout Sartz in California last year. After he was released, he's starting to draw interest again.
Reality: Hmmm Intriguing prospect that projects to an outside linebacker in the Patriots scheme. 6-foot-4, 240-pound defender, Sartz may need to prove he can perform physically before he gets a serious look by the Patriots. He was fifth-round pick by the Redskins in 2007 and was waived prior to the start of the season. He worked out for the Vikings a few weeks ago.
According to a league source, Sartz visited the Vikings recently, and could be signed by the team as early as next week. There's always a window of opportunity according to Sartz's agent the source. The source told Patriots Insider that they have spoken with the spoken with New England and recently although Sartz had yet to be brought in.
Impact: Sartz could project well into the Patriots scheme, but he would have to learn the system first. After missing the entire 2007 season, his physical conditioning might be an obstacle for whichever team he signs with. As the Patriots look to build their defensive depth with youth, if Sartz signed, he would be a practice squad candidate more than a serious contender for an active roster spot.
The Patriots might keep an eye on Sartz, and raid Minnesota's practice squad if the Vikings try to sneak him on it at the end of the summer. If you recall, the Patriots lost Garrett Mills to the Vikings last year after New England reportedly called Vikings head coach Brad Childress to ask the Vikings NOT to sign him. Sartz would be the perfect opportunity to exact a bit of payback for Childress' decision to ignore Belichick's request and his subsequent public airing of that laundry to a local radio show.
