Draft Buzz: Defender Busy After Pats Workout

Since working out for the Patriots, this Big Ten defender has been busy. Get the latest update on one player the Patriots might consider if they can't get their man early. ...Unless of course the competition picks him first.

Indiana University cornerback Tracy Porter had two private workouts and two official visits during the month of March, but he has an even busier April on tap.

On March 17th and 18, Porter worked out at Indiana University for the Chiefs and the Patriots. Then on the 27th, he flew south to one of New England's division rivals and had his first official NFL visit with the Miami Dolphins on the 28th. He wrapped up the month by flying to Tampa Bay on the 30th to visit with Jon Gruden and his staff on the 31st.

On April 8 and 9, Porter will check out opportunities with the Pittsburgh Steelers before heading out to visit with the Washington Redskins the evening of the 9th and during the day on the 10th.

But it will be the week of the 14th that will really test Porter's fortitude. He'll spend the 14th and 15th in New Orleans with the Saints, the 16th and 17th in Dallas, and will finish up on the 17th and 18th with a visit to the New York Jets.

In addition to his physical style of coverage that helped him steal away six interceptions in 2007 and 16 during his college career, Porter can provide additional value to an NFL team as an accomplished punt returner.  He averaged 13.6 yards per return while handling punts during his junior and senior year, aided by the 4.37-second 40-time speed that he showed off at the NFL Combine.

Despite the deep talent at the cornerback position this year, Porter is expected to be selected in the first two rounds -- and is drawing the level of attention from clubs reflective of that status. You can learn more about him in this exclusive Scout.com interview that was conducted during the Under Armour Senior Bowl week.
