June 2 is most often known in the NFL as the date when teams can begin releasing or trading players and be able to split remaining signing bonus proration over two years.
But that date is also important for another, less discussed reason. June 1 is the deadline for NFL teams to tender their remaining unrestricted free agents if they want to retain exclusive rights to that player after the signing period ends on July 22. The tender required is a one-year deal worth 110 percent of the player's previous year's salary. Players not tendered thus become totally unrestricted free agents on June 2.
Rarely do players receive the tender. This year, there were 310 unrestricted free agents when the league year began Feb. 29. Of the 100 remaining unrestricted free agents as of June 1, none received the tender. Of that group, nine have announced their retirement.
The June 1-2 date is significant for another reason regarding those players. Those that sign with a new team after June 1 do not count for either the new or old club in the formula used to award compensatory draft choices in the following year's draft.
Two players in the list below signed with new teams early this week: Saints defensive end Renaldo Wynn signed with the Giants and Raiders center Jeremy Newberry was signed by San Diego.
