Patriots Training Camp Opens With New Faces

The Patriots opened training camp on Thursday with plenty of new faces. The team had all of their draft picks signed and practicing by the end of the day. There were plenty of newly signed free agents to accompany the rookies.

Adams Joins The Team

The Patriots added yet another player to the roster Thursday when they signed defensive lineman Titus Adams. Terms of the deal were not available.

Adams is a young lineman who has bounced around the league. Though he hasn't played a game, he's considered a smart player with potential to develop into a starter. The 6-foot-4, 305-pound Nebraska product was originally selected by the New York Jets in the seventh round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He spent time with the Jets, Giants, Chargers and Bengals. Cincinnati released Adams on July 7, 2008.

Mayo Makes It To Camp

Rookie Draft pick Jerod Mayo made it to camp late Thursday after his deal became official. The Patriots had been in negotiations with their first round pick (10th overall) leading up to the start of camp. A published report indicated that both sides had reached an agreement, but Mayo was not seen at the morning practice. Head coach Bill Belichick indicated that Mayo's deal still hadn't become official and that he would be available as soon as all the loose ends were tied up.

"It sounds like they are getting pretty close but until they are done; to me they are not done' Belichick explained at Thursday morning's press conference. "So when they are done, we will let you know."

With the roster currently at its maximum of 80 players, someone needs to be released to make room to add Mayo. "In order to add him, we will have to create a roster spot," the coach confirmed.

Mayo's addition means that the Patriots have all of their Draft picks signed and in camp on time.

Bauta Released

The team released rookie offensive lineman Lavdrim Bauta to clear the way for Mayo's arrival. Bauta was signed by the team on Tuesday July 22. The rookie free agent earned ACC All-Academic honors while playing at Duke before transferring to Villanova for his senior season.

A Dozen On The PUP List

The Patriots announced 12 players would begin camp on the PUP list: Jarvis Green, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Rodney Harrison, Ellis Hobbs, Nick Kaczur, Stephen Neal, Oliver Ross, Bo Ruud, Mike Vrabel, Wes Welker, Ryan Wendell and Mike Wright.

The volume of names on the list is considerable. Six of the players are regular starters for the Patriots; giving cause for concern that there might be an issue should the injuries linger through much of training camp.
