QB Jeff Garcia will not travel with the team to Miami for Saturday's preseason opener as he recovers from a calf strain. Meanwhile, coach Jon Gruden is confident Garcia won't be bothered by the Bucs' failed pursuit of Brett Favre. "I'm sure Jeff wasn't real pleased with the reports and things of that nature," Gruden said. "At the same time, I feel at the end of the day, hopefully he'll understand and he knows we have a lot of respect for him and hopefully we get Jeff re-signed to a long-term deal because he's a hell of a quarterback."
LT Chris Williams had surgery on a herniated disc in his lower back, and it's unclear how long the team's first-round pick will be out.
RB Matt Forte rushed for 25 yards on seven carries and had three catches for 10 yards in the Bears' preseason opener. "It was fun, everything I expect it to be," said Forte. "For the amount of playing time I got, I thought I did well. I felt comfortable out there."
RB Garrett Wolfe rushed for 64 yards on seven carries, including a 42-yard scamper, and scored on a 25-yard reception in the preseason opener. "Just as there are people who want me to succeed, there are a lot who don't want me to be here," Wolfe said. "I want to continue to show the people within the organization who want me to be here that I do belong. I think did a little bit to help myself tonight."
QB Rex Grossman completed 4 of 8 passes for 44 yards and a touchdown in relief of Kyle Orton in the preseason opener. Grossman will start the second game.
Green Bay Packers
CB Scorpio Babers signed with the Packers. Babers, a 5-foot-11, 194-pound player, was a three-year letterman at Sam Houston State. He originally signed with Miami as a non-drafted free agent in May 2008.
WR Early Doucet (hamstring) sat out the preseason opener.
DT Jesse Mahelona signed with Jacksonville. Mahelona, 25, was on the Tennessee Titans active roster for the first game of the 2007 regular season at Jacksonville before being waived on Sept. 11. The 6-0, 311-pound defensive tackle played in 10 games with one start as a rookie in 2006 after being drafted by the Titans in the fifth round of the draft out of Tennessee. The Kailua-Kona, Hawaii native recorded 21 tackles and one sack.
DT Tywain Myles was placed on injured waivers with an ankle injury. Myles, 23, was a four-year letterman at Tarleton State. The 6-2, 305-pounder played in all 11 games as a senior and recorded 47 tackles, 10 for a loss, six sacks and three forced fumbles. The Nacogdoches, Texas native was named Lone Star Conference South Division Defensive Lineman of the Year as a junior and All-Conference first team as a junior and senior.
DT Theo Horrocks was placed on injured reserve. An undrafted free agent from Vanderbilt, Herrocks suffered a foot injury Monday.
LB Alvin Bowen's rookie season came to an end with a torn knee ligament that will require surgery and an expected recovery time of several months. He was placed on injured waivers. Bowen had been competing for a backup job and on the special teams units.
LB Brandon Archer (ankle) was placed on injured reserve.
New York Jets
QB Brett Favre arrived in New York on Friday, and even met mayor Michael Bloomberg at City Hall. He is expected to practice with the team for the first time Saturday. He was on the sideline for the Jets' preseason opener Thursday.
Kansas City Chiefs
LB Napoleon Harris (knee) sat out the preseason opener. Harris and young vet Pat Thomas are battling at middle linebacker. Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham, who now also coaches KC's linebackers, didn't get all he wanted from Harris, especially when dropping into the deep middle zone in the Cover Two, last year in Harris' first season with the Chiefs.
