Izzo Receives Honor

FOXBORO -- Linebacker Larry Izzo makes it a point to recognize his past as he works to reach out to those in need. A member of a military family, Izzo's background is closely tied to the charities he works hard to support. Izzo was recognized for his efforts when the Patriots presented him with the Ron Burton award Tuesday night at the annual kickoff gala.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft presented Izzo with the award, (in honor of Ron Burton, the first player drafted by the Patriots who was known for his charitable work in the area).

"My family and I admire the way that Larry has taken the initiative to go above and beyond the call of duty in the community," said Robert Kraft. "Philanthropy is an important obligation to my family and to everyone associated with the Patriots. We are proud of our players' achievements in the community this past year, and on a team where so many are so generous with their time, Larry should be commended for standing out."

Izzo hails from a military family, and thus the charities he supports are focused on providing support for those types of causes. Izzo holds a regular Karyoke singing event called "Larryoke". With assistance from his teammates, Izzo has helped raise over $600,000 for charities such as the Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy Fund, Home for Our Troops, the Fallen Patriot Fund, Fisher House Boston, Operation Ensuring Christmas and the Pat Tillman Foundation.

The thirteen-year veteran is in his eighth seasons leading the Patriots special teams. Originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by Miami in 1996, Izzo joined the Patriots as a free agent in 2001. He has led or tied his teammates for the most special teams tackles seven of the past nine seasons. He has played in 87 consecutive games for New England. He was named special teams captain for the past seven consecutive seasons.

Other recipients of the Ron Burton award include: Joe Andruzzi (2003), Troy Brown (2004), Matt Light (2005), Jarvis Green (2006) and Ty Warren (2007).
