Seau Headed For A Patriots Reunion

FOXBORO -- LB Junior Seau is in town and may be signing a deal with the New England Patriots as early as tomorrow. Early reports of Seau's return have been confirmed, as the veteran free agent linebacker could be signed to help a decimated linebacker unit suffering from more injuries than it can take.

First reported by Sports Illustrated and since confirmed, free agent linebacker Junior Seau was in Foxboro on Thursday to meet with the Patriots about re-joining the team. According to the Boston Globe, Seau's agent Marvin Demoff doesn't believe contract terms will be a roadblock.

"I don't think the contract will be an issue," Demoff told the Globe on Thursday. "If Junior is there and nothing is different from what they thought last night, I would suspect they'd do a contract, and he'd be a Patriot tomorrow. I don't think any promises were made to Junior or by Junior to them before he got on the plane."

Junior Seau spent the first 13 years of his career in San Diego building a reputation as one of the best middle linebackers in the NFL. Deemed expendable by the Chargers, Seau moved on to play in Miami for three injury plagued seasons. Miami had enough and was looking to start a youth movement, so they parted ways with the former All Pro. Seau returned to San Diego for what he called his "graduation."

After witnessing the ceremony, New England head coach Bill Belichick called the ageless wonder to see if he might be interested in playing a role in New England's defense. With a little convincing from former teammate Rodney Harrision, Seau agreed to terms, and revived his career with the Patriots.

With the Patriots disappointing end to their season, falling to the Giants in Super Bowl XLI, Seau vowed only to return to football if New England called. That time has come according to confirmed reports.

Seau is in New England and is expected to sign a deal as early as Friday.

The Patriots need for linebackers took a turn toward desperation as starters and backups suffered a series of injuries. First Adalius Thomas went down with an arm injury, then Pierre Woods with a mouth injury, and now Vince Redd with an ankle injury.

Thomas' injury is reportedly a broken arm, which is projected to keep him sidelined until the final regular season game at the earliest. Neither Woods nor Redd has participated in practice this week. Even Tedy Bruschi is nursing a knee injury .

To say the Patriots have injury concerns is an understatement.

New England agreed to terms with Rosevelt Covlin on Wednesday, adding another former linebacker to their mix. Both Colvin and Seau were part of the 2007 team, and will be reunited with Bruschi and Mike Vrabel as part of the team's linebacker rotation once New England officially signs Seau.
