Welker to I/R, Pats Sign Thomas

FOXBOROUGH, Mass -- The New England Patriots officially ended Wes Welker's season on Wednesday. the team placed their star wideout on injured reserve and signed LB Thomas Williams to the active roster. The Patriots also signed receiver Robert Ortiz and Nick Moore to the practice squad. WR Darnell Jenkins has also place on the practice squad / injured list.

Wes Welker is done for the year, and likely a portion of next season as well. New England placed Welker on injured reserve just three days after he tore ligaments in his knee against the Houston Texans.

Though Tom Brady was able to come back a year after tearing ligaments in his knee, Brady suffered his injury in the beginning of the season and was nearly three full months ahead of where Welker will be with his injury. The injury was devastating to Welker who thanked fans and friends on his personal website, vowing to return.

To replace Welker, the Patriots added former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Thomas Williams to the active roster. The 6-foot-1, 237-pound USC product has been part of the Patriots practice squad since November. He participated in 6 games his rookie season as a Jaguar.

Robert Ortiz should be familiar to Patriots fans. He was with the team during training camp in 2008 and again in the 2009 preseason. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound San Diego State product was originally signed as a rookie free agent by the San Diego Chargers in 2006. He was teammates with former Patriots quarterback - and third round pick - Kevin O'Connell.

Nick Moore is a free agent who spent time with the Vikings during training camp. He was waived from Minnesota's practice squad in September. The 6-foot-2, 186-pound Toledo product is the brother of New Orleans Saints WR Lance Moore.

Darnell Jenkins was originally signed by the Houston Texans as a rookie free agent in 2008. He spent most of the season on the Texans practice squad, being elevated to active roster for two games. The 5-foot-10, 191-pound receiver was signed to the Patriots practice squad on December 9, 2009.
