The New England Patriots signed their final Draft pick from this year's Draft class, DB Devin McCourty. According to McCourty's agent, the Rutgers defender has agreed to terms and will report to camp Wednesday. McCourtey was slected by the Patriots in the first round (27th overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft.
"@dmccourty32 made a promise to be at Patriots camp for the first practice. He's signed and and there. A man of his word" Simms wrote via Twitter on Wednesday morning.
Considered a decent defender, and a solid special teams player, McCourty will have an opportunity to compete for a a role from the outset of camp – something which is vitally important on a team loaded with talent.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound New York native recorded 238 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 5 fumble recoveries and six interceptions during his college career. He appeared in 52 games, starting 39 of them. Perhaps it is his pecial teams prowess which endeared him to the Patriots staff. At Rutgers McCourty registered 49 special teams tackles and six blocked kicks (6 punts, 1 FG).
McCourty joins returning starting DBs Darius Butler and Leigh Bodden and will likely compete with reserve defenders Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite for a role on defense.
