Patriots LB Marques Murrell was having quite the day at Tuesday's training camp afternoon session. The former Jets linebacker lined up play after play with the first unit of the defense -- quite the compliment for the first-year Patriot. It was arguably Murrell's best session at camp to date, until suddenly it wasn't.
After working so hard to get noticed, the effort exhausted Murrell, sapping his strength and forcing him to his knees near the end of practice. Moving noticeably slower, Murrell eventually sought out the help from the training staff, who doused him in iced towels and eventually removed him from the field using the cart.
Initially, it appeared that Murrell could have been suffering from a more severe injury. The injury now is not believed to be serious. It turns out that the high temperatures and rigorous work Murrell put in during the Patriots - Saints joint practice sessions on Tuesday seem to be the culprit of Murrell's illness – an illness now believed to be just fatigue and cramps from overheating.
The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Appalachian State product is a fresh face in the Patriots linebacker corps. He was signed by New England in March and was expected to compete for a role with the outside backers. He appeared in 10 games last season for the Jets, but became expendable at the end of the season.
