An insider's look at LB Malcolm Smith

A closer look at linebacker Malcolm Smith with help from Rob Rang of SeahawkFootball.com.

"Highly athletic OLB with the agility and acceleration and awareness for coverage responsibilities. Wasn't often used as a pass rusher in Seattle but possesses the length, flexibility and closing speed to be a factor. Excellent special teams player. May only need an opportunity to blossom. Played well when on the field but was stuck on bench in Seattle even after winning MVP of the Super Bowl."

"Isn't a traditional take on and shed linebacker. Looks to slip past blockers rather than meet them in the hole. Best game of his NFL career (at least to this point) came in the 2014 Super Bowl for everyone to see so he may struggle to live up to expectations through no fault of his own."

"Smith's versatility saw him see action all over for Seattle and I anticipate Oakland will use him similarly. His leadership and experience could help push some of the incumbent starters. Athletic enough to help the Raiders match up with the variety of RBs and TEs being used by divisional opponents."

"Obviously the familiarity with Ken Norton Jr. played a big role in the signing. It speaks to their relationship and the trust the club has for both."
