Raiders release safety Jonathan Dowling

The Oakland Raiders made a surprising cut on Saturday, releasing second-year safety Jonathan Dowling.

Safety Jonathan Dowling was a seventh-round pick last year, but has now been released by the Raiders.

While he surely wasn't a shoe-in to make the 53-man roster this year, the cut comes as a surprise due to its timing. The team still has until next Saturday to cut the team down to 53 players.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the team was worried about his "maturity", which is concerning due to the fact that he was released from his college program at Florida in 2010.

There hasn't been any word on if the Raiders will add anyone to replace him.
