The dreaded acronym worked its way to the Oakland Raiders Tuesday morning – MRI.
Defensive end DeLawrence Grant and wide receiver Corey Parchman sustained injuries in the morning practice that required an MRI examination. Grant injured his left knee in a scrimmage situation that did not involve contact.
Raiders head coach Bill Callahan said the injury appeared to occur while Grant was chasing down a running play with linebacker Eric Barton inadvertently leg-whipping him. Callahan added that the MRI was negative and Grant, who is a projected starter at one defensive end spot, would miss 8-10 days. In the meantime, Sam Williams and Tyler Brayton will log reps at Grant's position.
Parchman dislocated his right shoulder and is out indefinitely, Callahan said.
Outside linebacker Travian Smith returned to practice Tuesday morning after missing the last few days with an ankle injury. Smith was placed on the nonfootball injury list (NFI) at the start of camp after he reportedly sprained his ankle in a pickup basketball game.
Callahan not pleased with offense
Callahan was pleased with the defensive effort Tuesday morning but offense was a whole other matter.
"I looked at some of the blitz pickups and we just weren't sharp," Callahan said. "Defensively, our ability to run to the ball and finish is the best I've seen since I've been here. The finish, the pursuit, the angles, how guys are getting 10 hats on the frame are great. When you get that collective fervor it builds. We're more cohesive now than we've ever been."
Quote of the Day
"I'll hit you and I'll cover you. I'll make the big lick and I've got the range."
Safety Keyon Nash on whether he is more adept at hitting or covering.
WR Marcus Knight (hip) and LB Donny Green (calf) missed practice while CBs Phillip Buchanon (hamstring) and Nnamdi Asomugha (shoulder) continue to be limited. … Former Raider Richard Harvey, who played for Oakland in 1998-1999, witnessed practice Tuesday. … The Raiders placed TE Mondriel Fulcher on injured reserve. Callahan added that the team released Fulcher and reached an injury settlement with him.
