5 quick negatives from the Oakland Raiders offseason workouts

5 quick negatives from the Oakland Raiders offseason workouts

1. DJ Hayden is still DJ Hayden...

The Oakland Raiders selected DJ Hayden with the 12th overall pick hoping he would be the cornerback of the future but he has largely been a let down since. Hayden has good footwork and quick hips, giving him what he needs to succeed but he hasn't panned out. His biggest problem is his inability to turn his head and find the ball, which has resulted in penalties. While he has looked better in the slot, he still shows a lot of the same weaknesses. Hayden may need to watch out if he continues to struggle throughout training camp.

2. Clive Walford hasn't made an appearance...

Second-year tight end Clive Walford has yet to make an appearance on the field this offseason after suffering an injury that required minor surgery after an ATV accident. Walford excelled towards the end of last season and is expected to be a big part of the offense this year and him missing time will cost him after he missed a lot of last training camp due to another injury. The backup tight ends struggled on the field this offseason without Walford on the field, so hopefully the second-year tight end will return to the field quickly to build a chemistry with quarterback Derek Carr.

3. Charles Woodson left some big shoes to fill...

Future Hall of Famer Charles Woodson decided to hang up the cleats after last season and left the Raiders with a big hole in the secondary at the safety position. The Raiders didn't have depth in the secondary, especially the safety position. The Raiders did draft West Virginia safety Karl Joseph with the 14th-overall pick but he's rehabbing from a torn ACL and isn't expected to return to the field until training camp. Until then, the Raiders look like they will need some help at the safety position.

4. Calling all return men...

The Oakland Raiders have struggled to find a reliable return man for quite some years, and it looks like that problem has continued this offseason. The Raiders have even flirted with the idea of having cornerback TJ Carrie returning punts, and even scarier, wide receiver Amari Cooper. The Raiders need to find a reliable return man, whether it's Taiwan Jones or one of the speedy rookies they drafted.

5. And now we wait...

The offseason workouts can be such a tease to the NFL season... right when they get going, they stop and you have to wait until training camp starts. The Raiders are now on a break that'll last over a month, which gives the players a long time to wait around. Hopefully they can manage to stay out of trouble unlike Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib. So now, we wait until the end of July for training camp to begin.
