The Oakland Raiders took the field without pads as they prepare to take off to Arizona to take on the Arizona Cardinals for their first preseason game.
Missing practice was safety Jimmy Hall and linebacker Neiron Ball sat out practice, while undrafted rookie free agent Jalen Richard was also missing from practice. Head coach Jack Del Rio didn't speak to the media on Wednesday so there's no official word on what may have happened. We'll have to see if he's active for the Raiders game on Friday.
Here's some quick observations from the team's last practice before taking on the Cardinals:
- The most notable play of the day came from rookie safety Karl Joseph who recorded his first interception of camp. Joseph leaped high into the air to haul in the pick from quarterback Derek Carr. If you ask Carr about it, he'll tell you Joseph "finally" got him, and "jumped five feet in the air" to "snag it 10 feet out the air." Joseph looks comfortable on the field and it'll be fun to watch him continue to develop.
- Second-year wide receiver Amari Cooper's route running is ridiculous. We've seen him multiple times make a break on a dime that leaves the defender in slipping and struggling to keep up. His latest victim was cornerback TJ Carrie who fell while trying to blanket him on a comeback route.
- Carrie did make some nice plays Wednesday when he defended a pass to wide receiver Seth Roberts. Carrie also got around the line to block a field goal attempt from Giorgio Tavecchio.
- Roberts likely made the catch of the day when he got by the defense and Carr floated a perfect ball to him deep over the coverage. Roberts continues to be a key piece of the offense and appears to be a nice compliment to the wide receiving corps that already features Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper.
The Raiders fly out and take on the Arizona Cardinals on Friday at 7pm PST. They'll then fly back and will be back on the field in Napa for two more practices starting on Monday, before they break camps on Tuesday and heading back to Alameda.
