The Oakland Raiders added a longtime defensive coach to their coaching staff on Monday, announcing that John Pagano has been named Assistant Head Coach - Defense.
Pagano will be enterint his 22nd season in the NFL, having spent the previous 15 years with the Raiders' AFC West rival San Diego Chargers, including the last five as their defensive coordinator.
From 2012-16, Pagano helped the team rank 13th in the NFL in total net yards per game (348.1). Last year, his defense led the NFL with 18 interceptions despite having 11 defensive players on the IR.
A native of Boulder, Colo., Pagano was an all-state linebacker at Fairview High School in Boulder, Colo., before moving on to play at Mesa State from 1985-88. John’s older brother, Chuck, who was an assistant coach with the Raiders from 2005-06, is currently the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Both John and Chuck played for their father, Sam, at Fairview High, where Sam spent 26 years as the head coach at Fairview, winning three state titles.
Pagano and Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio previously worked together in 1997 with the New Orleans Saints.
