Training camp outlook: Safety

This is one story in a series that looks at the Oakland Raiders, who report for training camp on July 29 in Napa, CA, by position. Today, takes a look at safety:

Much of the Oakland Raiders focus during the offseason surrounding the surname "Woodson" has been centered on Charles Woodson but the return of safety Rod Woodson could loom large.

The 39-year old Rod Woodson suffered a knee injury that cost him six games and placed him on injured reserve. Woodson has not yet decided if he will play this season as that will depend on his health.

If Woodson is healthy enough to play, he can still be an asset because of his instincts and intelligence. If Woodson cannot return, free agent cornerback Ray Buchanan is an option.

As for strong safety, Derrick Gibson and Anthony Dorsett have not distinguished themselves despite having numerous opportunities. Gibson was a first-round draft pick in 2001. He has been a decent run supporter but nothing else. Dorsett tested the free agent market in the offseason and is still without a team. It's not beyond possibility that he could return to Oakland.

Key an eye on third-round draft pick Stuart Schweigert (Purdue) and free agent pickup David Terrell if Gibson continues to falter.
