Raiders sign Mirer

Marques Tuiasosopo is likely to be the Raiders No. 2 quarterback in training camp this season but the job won't just be handed to him. On Saturday Oakland announced it had signed veteran quarterback Rick Mirer to compete with Tuiasosopo for the back-up position behind starter Rich Gannon.

Mirer, 32, joins his sixth NFL team. He spent the last two seasons in San Francisco but rarely saw the field. The 1993 Rookie of the Year, Mirer was signed to fill the void left when Rodney Peete -- the Raiders' No. 3 quarterback last season -- signed a one-year deal with Carolina. Tuiasosopo, Oakland's second-round draft pick in 2001, spent his entire rookie season as an understudy to Gannon, the AFC's two-time Pro Bowl MVP. His learning curve figures to get accelerated this season with the Raiders addition of quarterbacks coach Jim Harbaugh, who will work one-on-one with Tuiasosopo in the upcoming mini-camps and in training camp. Though Mirer has more NFL experience than Tuiasosopo, it's expected that the younger quarterback will get the edge for the No. 2 slot based on his familiarity with Oakland's offense. The Raiders also have Bobby Hoying on their roster, but Hoying sat out most of the 2001 season with an elbow injury. Hoying underwent surgery on his elbow but there is private concern that he won't be healed in time for the start of training camp.
