"I don't have any information for you guys on that," Kiffin said when asked about his starter. "Obviously I know but I have no information for you on that right now."
Pressed why he doesn't want to disclose who the starter is, Kiffin bristled slightly.
"Because I don't want to tell you."
Later in the Raiders' locker room, Culpepper said he hasn't been told who will start against the Lions, even though Kiffin insists he has told both quarterbacks of his plans and says the decision should be apparent to the rest of the team.
"They know," Kiffin said. "It's simply a matter of always trying to gain a competitive advantage."
NFL.com believes it knows. The website ran a story Wednesday afternoon proclaiming McCown the starter. But in typical internet fashion, the report cited no source and gave no other credible reason for the story.
If the players know, nobody is talking.
Following Wednesday's practice, the locker room was a desolate place. A few players passed through, some stopping briefly at their stalls before heading off to meetings.
"We don't know anything about it," linebacker Sam Williams said. "If we did, somebody might slip up and say something, but we don't."
It should be noted that McCown was chosen to be on a conference call with Detroit media.
