Davis has a quarterback preference

Lane Kiffin isn't saying who the Raiders quarterback will be for Sunday's game against Detroit but owner Al Davis knows who he prefers.

After emerging from his car just before noon Thursday, Davis chatted briefly with reporters while on his way to watch practice.

"What a place for a press conference," Davis said with a smile. Asked who he thought Oakland should start at quarterback, Davis' reply was telling.

"Who I think it should be?" he said. "He may be in Mobile, (Ala.)."

That was an obvious reference to No. 1 draft pick JaMarcus Russell, who remains without a contract while his agents and the Raiders continue to haggle over details on a multi-year deal.

In the meantime, Kiffin has chosen a starter for the Lions game but has yet to reveal it publicly. Several outlets have reported the job was Josh McCown's, while ESPN.com flip-flopped and first reported it was McCown before changing to Daunte Culpepper and then back to McCown again.
