Raiders sign Archuleta

The Raiders quietly announced the signing of Adam Archuleta on Monday but the veteran safety won't be getting any work in the secondary. For now it appears that the former first-round draft pick of the Rams will be taking reps at linebacker as Oakland tries to shore up its run defense.

Head coach Lane Kiffin made the announcement shortly after the Raiders completed their first practice Monday morning. Archuleta did not attend the workout but walked through the team's facilities following practice and was escorted away to take a physical.

"He's a great guy with talent, a good nose for the ball. He brings a lot to the game," said Oakland linebacker Robert Thomas, who played with Archuleta for three seasons while both were in St. Louis. "I really haven't followed him the last couple years. I know he's kind of been struggling a little bit. It's a fresh new start. He's here, we'll work hard with him."

There's no indication of where Archuleta will initially line up with the Raiders. He started as an inside linebacker in college, spent three seasons at weakside linebacker before moving to strong safety in the NFL.

Archuleta could be on the field Monday evening when the Raiders hold their night practice from 7-9 p.m.
