Raiders sign Janikowski

The Oakland Raiders and PK Sebastian Janikowski agreed to a 4 year deal that makes the veteran the highest paid kicker in NFL history.

According to a report by the Associated Press, the 4 year, $16 million contract includes $9 million that is guranteed.

Janikowski, a controversial first round pick by the Raiders in 2000, is coming off of his strongest season in the NFL. He made 26 of 29 field goals (all three misses were beyond 45 yards, including one from 66)including one from 61 yards out against Cleveland. His 17 touchbacks on kickoffs were good for 6th best in the NFL.

Janikowsi is also the Raiders' career scoring leader.

This signing comes one year after the Raiders made punter Shane Lechler the highest paid at his position with a 4 year, $12 million dollar deal, giving the Raiders the most expensive punting/kicking tandem in the history of the NFL. While Lechler is regarded by most as the best punter in the NFL, Janikowski has yet to make the Pro Bowl though strong arguments could be made fo his making the AFC roster in 2008 and 2009.

In other words, Lechler has consistently shown his worth over his entire career with Oakland and can justify his salary. It is now up to Janikowski to do the same by continuing the consistency he's achieved over the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
