Raiders/49ers to play exhibition on national TV

The three-time defending AFC Champion Oakland Raiders, after opening the 2003 preseason schedule at home against the St. Louis Rams, will then face the 49ers in San Francisco the following Thursday night, August 14, in a nationally televised, prime –time contest on FOX Television, the NFL announced today.

 The Raiders preseason schedule also includes a home game against the Minnesota Vikings and a trip to Dallas to face the Cowboys.

The Raiders will open the 2003 preseason schedule the week of August 7-11 against the Rams at Network Associates Coliseum. The Raiders hold an 8-7 advantage in the all-time preseason series versus the Rams and a 7-3 lead in the all-time regular season series. The last preseason contest between the Raiders and Rams in St. Louis was in 2000 while the last regular season contest was last season, also in St. Louis. The Rams last played a preseason contest in Oakland in 1995, and last played a regular season game in Oakland in 1997.

The Raiders will make that trek across the Bay Bridge to face the defending NFC West champion 49ers in San Francisco on August 14. The Silver and Black defeated the 49ers 17-10 in a preseason game at Network Associates Coliseum in August 2002. The teams also played in the regular season in 2002 in Oakland. The Raiders lead the preseason series versus the 49ers, 16-14 and lead the regular season series, 6-4. The game will mark the third straight preseason contest between the Raiders and 49ers.

The Silver and Black will then host the Minnesota Vikings the week of August 21-25 at Network Associates Coliseum. The last time the two teams met, the Raiders came away with a 22-17 victory over the Vikings during the 1999 regular season and hold a 7-2 advantage in the all-time series. The Vikings are 2-0 against the Raiders in the preseason.  The Raiders also host the Vikings in the 2003 regular season.

The Raiders close out the 2003 preseason with a trip to Dallas for the second straight year to face the Cowboys. The Raiders and Dallas face one another in the preseason for the 11th straight year. The Raiders lead the all-time preseason series 16-7 and have a 5-3 edge in regular season contests.

Actual preseason dates and times will be released at a later date.

In the regular season, the Raiders face the following opponents, with dates and times to be released by the NFL this spring:

HOME: Baltimore, Cincinnati, Denver, Green Bay, Kansas City, Minnesota, New York Jets and San Diego

AWAY: Cleveland, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, San Diego and Tennessee
