Training Camp News & Notes: Day 3

While Chaz Schilens continues to sit out and nurse his sore left foot, another important wide receiver is unavailable for practice following an injury from yesterday. S&BI brings you the news and notes from day three of training camp.

-First and foremost, second-year wide receiver Louis Murphy sat out the morning practice session because of a concussion he suffered on Friday.

There seems to be some confusion as to when he actually suffered the injury. According to Head Coach Tom Cable, it happened in the afternoon session, but by Murphy's account, it actually occurred during morning practice. Said Murphy, "Nnamdi (Asomugha) kneed me in the back of the head. Finished practice, felt pretty good. Woke up for the second practice with a horrible headache."

Cable said that Murphy would be sitting out for "a day or so," as the team will have to follow the league's concussion protocol.

-Chaz Schilens sat out another day of practice, as he continues to rest his sore left foot. To help the process, Schilens is trying out special shoes that provide additional support and comfort.

-The secondary had a field day, as there were picks-a-plenty and the coverage made things difficult for both quarterbacks and receivers.

Chris Johnson had an especially good day. He was excellent in coverage and made a number of great plays. Tyvon Branch, Michael Huff, and Walter McFadden also had nice days.

-Although the quarterbacks haven't been overly impressive, the quality and quantity of nice plays made are noticeably improved from year's past. Last year, the quarterback play was fringe at best and you were just excited if the routine play was made. This time around, it's a little bit more than that. Campbell, in particular, has been pretty impressive while on the moving, showing poise and displaying a nice delivery on rollouts.

-Al Davis made his first appearance of camp, observing practice from his cart.
