The commitment: WR Mike Williams, Lake Marion HS
Date committed: July 31, 2012
Ranked: Four-star No. 38 WR
Other options: South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame
Position status: DeAndre Hopkins' early departure for the NFL has left a void at the 9 wide receiver position. Martavis Bryant was the primary backup last season, but there are rumblings that Sammy Watkins could move from the 2 to the 9 in 2013. With the potential of Bryant and Watkins occupying the first two spots on the depth chart, the path to early playing time at the 9 could be blocked. But, with the graduation of Jaron Brown, the 5 position is also open. Charone Peake figures to step into that job. Williams and fellow 2013 signee Kyrin Priester could push for time behind Peake.
The evaluation: Williams has the size schools across the country covet. He is long and very athletic, but he still has a lot of room to develop. He can go up and get the football, he could be a real weapon inside the red zone, and he has a high ceiling. To take his game to the next level, he needs to improve his strength, especially upper-body strength. That will help him get off the ball. He needs to improve his route-running also. - Chad Simmons
Estimated impact: 2014. Given the number of wide receivers used in the rotation it's very possible that Williams will avoid a redshirt this fall. But that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be counted on to play a ton of meaningful snaps. Likely a depth guy in year one, Williams projects to show signs as an impact player after a full year of growth in a college program.
