Bears Win !
by Rams Nation's Oscar F Lopez
Preseason is just a tune up for things to come. It probably doesn't mean a thing.
Well let's hope that the preseason means nothing in terms of Rams play. The Rams
entered their second encounter of the preseason versus the Chicago Bears. The
home opener started with the Bears ready to score. Jim Miller's 26 yard pass to
Dez White really set the tone for the Bears. And the 42 yard kick by Paul Edinger
confirmed that the Bears were serious about preseason wins.
With 4:48 left in the first quarter, Kurt Warner put together a 71 yard drive
that ended with a 4 yard pass for a touchdown by Ernie Conwell. Trung Candidate
did a descent job in this game by rushing 21 times for a total of 89 yards. While
Lamar Gordon rushed 7 times for 67 yards. The Bears basically showcased every
player in camp. Coach Jauron played all quarterbacks, including veteran Chris
But the real story of the game was QB Ken Mastrole. Mastrole who has played pro
ball within the ranks of the Arena League, came in the last 2 minutes of the game
and orchestrated an 81 yard drive that resulted in a 15 yard touchdown catch by
Kenny Christian with only 55 seconds remaining. The Bears tried for two points
but failed. That placed the Rams at a disadvantaged now trailing 19-13.
With the Rams current QB situation. It was nice to see that Marc Bulger seems
to be very poised and ready to play if called upon to be the number two man. Marc
finished with 189 yards on 13 of 19 passing. The only negative was that the line
was not great. Marc was sacked seven times. The Rams in the 3rd quarter led by
Marc Bulger , scored a touchdown with 12:32 left in the game. The 26 yard touchdown
catch by Brandon Manumaleuna broke a 10 all tie. And placed the Rams with the
lead 17-10. The Bears' Jon Hilbert then kicked a 33 yard field goal with 10:51
remaining cutting the Rams lead to 17-13.
With only 3 sacks all night by the big boys of Zgonina, Bullard, and Brian Young.
The Rams will need to have this defensive line play better in the remaining games.
And keeping a hold of the football by the running backs is key. The Gordon and
Candidate fumbles must improve if they plan to contribute in the regular season.
The bottom line is that the Bears just played a better preseason game. For Mike
Martz so far no worries cause preseason doesn't matter.
