Coach Linehan explained the injuries so far, and talked about the team's two transactions after practice Monday.

(After AM Practice)

(Opening Statements)
"Just one announcement (DE) Victor (Adeyanju) got a fracture in his middle finger from yesterday and actually we sent him back to St. Louis this morning. He should have surgery this afternoon to put a couple pins in his middle finger. It was a clean break, of his middle finger. What that means is he probably wouldn't be available to play for a couple weeks if it were during the season, probably going to be limited here in about two weeks for practice, maybe shorter than that. It's anywhere from a two to four week injury, from being cleared to play. But, once he gets that wound healed he'll be able to get some work done with a club on that hand. He did it with a broken wrist I think before, so he's not unaccustomed to it. This is where you start getting banged up a little bit, we have to make some adjustments. Don't have any announcements for any additions to the team, but we do have a roster spot open, so we've got a couple guys scheduled to visit. One guy's here and he's got to go through some physical things before we make a decision on that. But, we're getting a little short. Probably the D- Line spot is what's being affected the most in camp at this point as far as our depth."

(On the available roster spot)
"Basically because (RB) Steven's (Jackson) not in camp, we file him as ‘did not report' and we get another spot. Certainly when (RB) Steven (Jackson) gets in that spot won't be there anymore, so at least we have that spot."

(On LB Chris Draft's early departure from practice)
"He's getting a little bit of cramps, and his back is acting up a little bit, it's more fatigue. It's something we're going to have to manage."

(On the wrap on LB Chris Draft's left knee)
"He felt a cramp in his lower hamstring area, so we just held it down."

(On CB Ron Bartell's hip being wrapped at practice)
"Yeah, well again, these are fatigue injuries, usually about this time you start getting those kind of things. A lot of it's precautionary stuff, and just treating guys that are starting to get some little cramping and slight pulls."

(On what (T John) Greco brings to the offensive line)
"His values first of all, I mean the guy has started four years and he's been a very very excellent player at the college level and now his versatility is going to be a strength for us at this point, to be able to play tackle and guard. I think eventually guard will be his best position, but he's been playing tackle to this point and he played tackle in college, and the reason we felt really good about that pick was that he could play both and will continue to do that. I think he's been a guy, like I said before, when you put the pads on, he's been a guy that's really shown up even more at this point."

(On how DE Victor Adeyanju injured his middle finger)
"Just doing an individual drill, one- on- one pass rush, and actually hit a bag. Bags are so you don't have that. It's just a fluke, a complete fluke."

(On FB Dan Kreider)
"He's a veteran. I can tell you right now that he's got a comfort level that I'm impressed with as a far as the offense. And, you know, it's different ‘verbage' for him, and he played in a different system at Pittsburgh his whole career. He's a professional; that guy is all business. He's out here and he takes every rep, mentally he knows what's going on, he knows that's the key to being good in the sport. I'm really pleased that we were able to work something out with him. "

(On whether or not he has talked to RB Steven Jackson)
"I have not talked to (RB) Steven (Jackson) since the night before we were reporting. But, I've stayed in contact with him. I've become a ‘text' guy, so I see how he's doing what he's doing, he's working. Obviously, you know, I know we've got to take care of this first. We just kind of let him know where we're at and things that are going on. He's real focused on what's going on at camp, so his head's definitely in the right place. I know it's a distraction and kind of a tough time for him, I know this is an important year for us and all that stuff, but it is important to keep a line of communication at this point. "

(On whether or not RB Steven Jackson is in St. Louis)
"I have no idea, honestly I don't. I don't know where he is."

(On the context of text messages exchanged between Head Coach Scott Linehan and RB Steven Jackson)
"He just says, I'm working, I ran today, lifted, how'd practice go, you know, that kind of stuff."

(On RB Steven Jackson)
"Well, we talk about it all the time so there's really nothing new to ask. Like I said, I know (President of Football Operations/General Manager) Jay (Zygmunt) spoke with everybody on what's going on there and, at this point, there's really nothing to add to that."

(On RB Antonio Pittman and RB Brian Leonard)
"I think it's a great opportunity for them to move up and get reps with the next group. I thought today was our best day and I thought it was the line and the backs best day as far as working together and that was good to see. Basically what's happened with Steven not being in is we're working Brian (Leonard) over at the tailback position and still getting some fullback with the two backs in camp and that enables us to work Brian at tailback and that's been good because we've been able to see him do some of the things that he's capable of doing there so your practicing your utilization of him in some different spots, but (RB) (Antonio) Pittman has really impressed me. I think, we made an investment in our future picking him up last year knowing he wouldn't be ready and wouldn't know our system, but by the middle of the year we were able to use and he was able to get a lot of great reps in the off season on our system now and now he's working with the ones so its night and day for him."

(On T Orlando Pace's health)
"Well I think very good. A year ago at this time, coming off the other injury, I was more concerned because he wasn't using that arm yet or getting confidence in it. Orlando is getting in there and going and he's taking limited reps. My only thing is working his conditioning. He is not taking that many reps so we have a little plan for that, but it looks a lot more like the old Orlando to me."

(On if the team has to consider adding another defensive lineman because of the injuries to DE Victor Adeyanju and DT Josh Thompson)
"Yeah, we sure do. I think we have one on the way at this point; we should get a physical and a workout. I guess that will be today or in the morning, but for sure, we're getting it looked at."

(On his average day here)
"Well, I start, I'm more of a night person so I get up at six in the morning, have my coffee and basically make my notes for the day. It kind of depends on if we have a two-a-day or a one-a-day. Get prepared for practice and we'll go back, watch the practice as a staff, then we've got meetings here right away. Players will get some time off to rest and then we'll be back out here sooner or later, but the evenings we go back, we eat, we watch the practice tape. I watched the first two periods and after our position meetings and team meeting, then go back and watch the seven-on-seven of the team and at night we have staff meeting then we go through personnel every night and then we go through personnel in depth every three nights which takes a little longer, but it cuts into coaches time, which I try not to do cause I think they get about four hours of sleep right now. So we chose this profession, we love it, it's kind of crazy I guess."

(On if the team evaluated personnel frequently)
"Yeah, we evaluate personnel daily. In fact, we have to do it twice a day on a two-a-day just because a lot of us need an injury update or player reps. So if there's any changes in personnel we're doing or anything and we cover what we're going to do in our practice schedule the next day too. So we made those decisions, we made those plans back in Spring and in June. But you've always got to make some adjustments based on maybe not being able to use a package because somebody may not be in there so you go through those as well. But this is really the funnest time of year, to be honest with you. You've got no distractions so it's all football."

(On his workout routine here)
"Yeah, I think everybody does that or you have to. I try to get a jog in; I encourage, other coaches do and I know just to try, keep in shape. But, during two-a-days you get in a little different mode. We haven't gotten into our rhythm yet, this is our first swing into our two-a-day schedule so once you get that, you kind of figure out when you can do that. We get programmed, but once you get into the rhythm of camp, you can pretty much stay on schedule."

(After PM Practice)

(Opening Remarks)
"Just a couple of transactions. We signed a corner from, he was recently with (the) Carolina (Panthers) (and played college football at) Nebraska, named (CB) Cortney Grixby. He was out here today, so some of you probably already seen him. We claimed an offensive tackle that was with Miami and was waived and we claimed him, named Julius Wilson he played his college ball at UAB. So by doing that, we release the names. So that's where we are right now. We're just starting managing this training camp and this roster. So we had a couple of guys that have some tight hamstrings. I think some of you saw that (S) OJ (Atogwe) wasn't out there. He aggravated a hamstring and it's sore, so I kept him out of practice, I have no idea how long he will be out. Hopefully sooner than later, he'll be back in. (TE) Anthony Becht also tweaked a hamstring in practice as well. So, you know, these are the dog days of training camp and this is the part we've got to get through and we've got to get our guys through this and still get our work done."

(On an update on LB Chris Draft)
"Well, he's just really got a tight lower back and we did an MRI on him and it shows that he's played football for a lot of years basically and he's got a real tight lower back. And he's going to come out here everyday and try to go. He's going to do everything he can to get out on the field and it just wasn't good enough to be able to participate. So we are going to leave that up to him as we go because he knows how to get himself ready to play. So, I'm not concerned about it."

(On what QB Trent Green brings to the team)
"Well, great presence is the first thing. You know, he's great for our locker room. He just has a really good feel for team dynamics and those kinds of things. That was a big part of him being part of this team as well as him being a great quarterback. He's having to work with a group he wasn't worked with before. So, we'll go through those growing pains, but never hear a complaint out of him and that's what you want to hear out of your quarterback."

(On having K Josh Brown on his side rather than competing against him)
"He's first of all, Josh, was in our opinion the best free agent at his position, coming out in free agency, and we had targeted the fact that if Jeff (Wilkins) was going to retire we were certainly going to be in need of one and we were going to do everything we could to get him. And he's here know and we're really glad to have him. He's a great veteran to have on your team and he's got a lot of talent and he's hopefully going to be knocking them through for us when we go down on the wire verses his old team."

(On the extra reps the running backs are receiving in the absence of RB Steven Jackson)
"First of all, (RB) Antonio Pittman's got the best opportunity, that he probably didn't know he was going to have when in last cut, because he was a young player, and they were probably hoping to keep him on the practice squad he was sitting out there waiting, wondering what was going to happen to him. We claimed him, he came in, whole new offense, and it was kind of like, hey, just redshirting at least for the time being. And now, he was able to play last year, got a taste of it, now here is running with the first unit and he‘s taking advantage of it.  He had a great off season for us number one, and number two, he's out here running the ball really well. He's been good with the ball and running hard. (RB) Brian Leonard, who we drafted to play any position in our backfield, has now moved to basically mostly playing half back, he's not totally out of the full back mix, but just because of where we are, and you know he's having a good camp. (RB) Travis Minor, he's mister ‘Steady Eddie,' he's special teams, one of our most valuable guys there, and he does a lot of good things for us there. We're working on our depth while we wait for (RB) Steven (Jackson) to get in, so you have to look at that as a positive. This isn't the first time this has happened in this profession, we'd certainly like him to be here, but I know we have to get everything take care of there so we can move on. I mean we've just gone through basically four training camp practices. We're not too far along. We're not even to our first scrimmage, and we're a good almost two weeks out of a preseason game. There's a lot of positives to get in these other guys that aren't accomplished, you know, ready to play."

(On if RB Lance Ball has caught his eye)
"Of course he has, I didn't mean to leave him out of there, but (RB) Lance (Ball) probably is of all those guys I mentioned, probably is getting the best opportunity, because he's getting a lot of snaps he probably wouldn't have. But, he's a really good runner, very productive in college, and when we were kind of evaluating what we needed, we felt we needed to get an extra guy that was productive at that position and when he came in he was immediately the right kind of guy. So, we're happy to have him."

(On DE James Hall and  DE Chris Long)
"Well, (DE) James Hall has played a heck of a lot more snaps in the National Football League and has played very very well. His experience is going to be real valuable to us. The great thing about James is, as hard as it was for him to first of all be released by us, second of all bringing him back and then we draft a guy with our second overall pick. I mean here he is just thinking, what, they're trying to send a message here. It has nothing to do with that, we felt we took the best player and we felt like we were really fortunate to have been able to re-sign him, because we look at him as a starter as well. I'm really happy with him in camp, he's probably of the guys the returning from last year that we're starting, he's one guy that's come to camp with his mind on playing really good football."

(On how collectively things are coming together on the offense)
"I think very well, we're introducing a lot of offense and each practice we're basically introducing a big phase of our offense. At this point, we're not repeating a lot of plays, because we're getting every play installed, so you can't run them all. Once we get through our training camp mode when we're done here, we'll probably be done installing plays and start kind of working on refining what we're doing. You'll see the execution of things continue to get good. But, I'm at this point pretty pleased. Two things that we've got to really be better at than we were a year ago is that number one, protecting the ball on offense and number two, getting the ball on defense. I think, both things are going to continue to be emphasized and get better and better as we go through camp."

(On distribution of playtime for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd team)
"I think the one's and two's are getting fairly equal reps.  Probably a few more for the one's, but pretty equal.  I think the three's as we go are getting either reps with the second unit or with the third unit.  So, I think three's get the least amount in team, what we do is the guys that have played and the veterans, we start moving guys from the two's with the one's and the three's with the two's, so they get in playing snaps with the roster at 80 and we have some hurt guys.  We don't have any problem getting guys snaps."

(On LB Chris Draft's injury and injury prevention with other players)
"Well, that's part of my job is managing guys that go and you basically have to drag them off the field.  Most everybody is like that, I mean guys are fighting for their jobs, that's how they approach it.  Training camp is the most intense part of that, because it's about reestablishing yourself if you've been around or coming in and basically taking somebody else's job if you are a young guy.  Yeah you do have to do that.  Most of what I do is spent time talking to players and our trainers and doctors about how much guys should do, if any, and if they can go, and then you do have to leave a lot of things up to the player.  He has to make a good decision, because he's going to know how he feels better than anybody."

(On text messaging with RB Steven Jackson)
"It's good.  I haven't misspelled any words.  So it's going pretty good.  I've learned all the abbreviations.  No, it's been fine.  I've been keeping in touch with him.  He's doing great.  He's working very hard and very anxious to get in camp, those are all the kind of things and we both have a very good relationship about what's going on and always have and I respect the heck out of Steven.  I know he will be ready to go when he is in and I don't think it will be too long.  I think positive."

(On DT Josh Thompson)
"He had basically a ruptured planta fascia which is not as bad as an Achilles or anything like that, but he right now can not be cleared for probably at least four or five weeks.  As far as his status, it is kind of up in the air right now what we will do at this point. Just running, planting.  It wasn't any falling on it or anything like that."

(On WR Torry Holt taking 15 minutes to ride the bike)
"Maybe he wanted to enjoy the nice day.  No, Torry's fine."

(On today's weather)
"They've all been good.  I don't have a complaint about one day.  Maybe about 81 (degrees) high?  It's pretty good. It wasn't too hot.  You get down a little bit south of here at this time of the year you don't get much of a breeze and so it's a welcome weather change.  We are looking forward to get to St. Louis, we really are.  Right now it's just nice to be working in this climate."

There's a lot of positives to get in these other guys that aren't accomplished, you know, ready to play.\"

(On if RB Lance Ball has caught his eye)
\"Of course he has, I didn't mean to leave him out of there, but (RB) Lance (Ball) probably is of all those guys I mentioned, probably is getting the best opportunity, because he's getting a lot of snaps he probably wouldn't have. But, he's a really good runner, very productive in college, and when we were kind of evaluating what we needed, we felt we needed to get an extra guy that was productive at that position and when he came in he was immediately the right kind of guy. So, we're happy to have him.\"

(On DE James Hall and DE Chris Long)
\"Well, (DE) James Hall has played a heck of a lot more snaps in the National Football League and has played very very well. I'm really happy with him in camp, he's probably of the guys the returning from last year that we're starting, he's one guy that's come to camp with his mind on playing really good football.\"

(On how collectively things are coming together on the offense)
\"I think very well, we're introducing a lot of offense and each practice we're basically introducing a big phase of our offense. I think, both things are going to continue to be emphasized and get better and better as we go through camp.\"

(On distribution of playtime for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd team)
\"I think the one's and two's are getting fairly equal reps. We don't have any problem getting guys snaps.\"

(On LB Chris Draft's injury and injury prevention with other players)
\"Well, that's part of my job is managing guys that go and you basically have to drag them off the field. He has to make a good decision, because he's going to know how he feels better than anybody.\"

(On text messaging with RB Steven Jackson)
\"It's good. I think positive.\"

(On DT Josh Thompson)
\"He had basically a ruptured planta fascia which is not as bad as an Achilles or anything like that, but he right now can not be cleared for probably at least four or five weeks. As far as his status, it is kind of up in the air right now what we will do at this point. Just running, planting. It wasn't any falling on it or anything like that.\"

(On WR Torry Holt taking 15 minutes to ride the bike)
\"Maybe he wanted to enjoy the nice day. No, Torry's fine.\"

(On today's weather)
\"They've all been good. Right now it's just nice to be working in this climate.\"
