BALTIMORE RAVENS' REPORT CARD

Quarterback: B-plus Joe Flacco was on the verge of outdueling Tom Brady when offensive coordinator Cam Cameron went extremely conservative and the offense hit a lull in clutch situations. He completed 27 of 35 passes for 285 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 119.3 quarterback rating

Running back: B

Pro Bowl runner Ray Rice didn't have big holes to work with very often, but gained a respectable 88 yards on 23 carries. His longest run was just eight yards. Fullback Le'Ron McClain had a costly personal foul for retaliating against Jermaine Cunningham. Willis McGahee didn't play at all, a mysterious coaches' decision.

Receiver: B

Derrick Mason caught eight passes for 100 yards. Anquan Boldin hauled in a 25-yard Joe Flacco spiral for a touchdown. And tight end Todd Heap toughed it out after suffering an illegal helmet-to-helmet hit from safety Brandon Meriweather, coming back in the game. He also caught a touchdown. The Ravens should have thrown the ball more against a young secondary.

Offensive line: C-plus

Joe Flacco was sacked three times, but there were some coverage sacks. They had a tough time with All-Pro nose guard Vince Wilfork. There wasn't enough seal blocks to make big plays on the sweeps and zone runs. Michael Oher struggled, allowing a sack and committing three penalties.

Defensive line: C-plus

Haloti Ngata continues to dominate offensive linemen despite a sprained medial collateral ligament. He sacked Tom Brady twice. The Patriots rushed for 127 yards on 26 carries, though. The stretch play was way too effective overall.

Linebacker: C-plus

Ray Lewis, Jarret Johnson and Jameel McClain got beat in space too often by undersized, scrappy running back Danny Woodhead, who rushed for 63 yards on 11 carries. He also caught five passes for 52 yards. Terrell Suggs applied good pressure, but the Ravens needed even more of that. Brady had way too much time to find his receivers.

Secondary: C-plus

They had trouble adjusting to the Patriots' new dink-and-dunk scheme and new personnel after trading Randy Moss and trading for former Super Bowl hero Deion Branch. Branch caught nine passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. The Patriots picked on Lardarius Webb and Haruki Nakamura. Webb is beaten on every fake. It could have been much worse if the Patriots didn't have suspect hands. They dropped at least five passes.

Special teams: C

The Ravens contained Brandon Tate, one of the most dangerous returners in the league. He had one kickoff return for 19 yards as Billy Cundiff delivered three touchbacks. However, Cundiff's short kickoff in the second half proved costly. Sam Koch averaged 44.9 yards per punt. The Ravens' punt return and kickoff return game needs a shot in the arm. Wes Welker had a 22-yard punt return.
