BALTIMORE — Joe Flacco put on a clinic through two quarters and some change, throwing for 266 yards and two touchdowns in Baltimore's 48-17 preseason rout over Jacksonville.
Flacco's favorite target of the evening was receiver Torrey Smith, who finished the game with eight catches for 103 yards. From the onset of the game, the offense looked in control.
"We executed well in the first half and played sharply at times," coach John Harbaugh said.
Leading 3-0 with 2:33 to go in the first quarter, Baltimore began a drive at its own 15-yard line and began attacking. Smith caught a pass for 16 yards which was followed up with another 16-yard reception from Anquan Boldin.
The drive was capped with a 5-yard reception to Boldin for a touchdown to put the Ravens up 10-0.
After forcing a three-and-out, Baltimore added three more points to the scoreboard with a 53-yard field goal from rookie Justin Tucker. Tucker handled all field goal and kicking duties as Billy Cundiff was given the night off.
The Jaguars added a field goal to trim Baltimore's lead to 13-3 at the half.
Flacco and the offense kept moving with its no-huddle attack early in the second quarter. After forcing a Jaguars punt, Flacco wasted no time moving the ball down the field, beginning the drive from Baltimore's own 20 yard line.
Flacco went seven-of-nine on the drive, finishing it with an 8-yard touchdown to fullback Vonta Leach. The score was set up five plays previously with a 32-yard catch-and-run from Smith.
"We felt good and we had a good rhythm going," Flacco said. "There was still one drive there where we would have liked to finish off with a touchdown rather than a field goal. Overall, though, it was a pretty good night."
Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor picked up where Flacco left off when he entered with 6:23 to go in the third quarter. Taylor threw a quick pass over the middle to receiver LaQuan Williams, who used a spin move to get 35 yards down the field. This helped set up an 8-yard touchdown to Williams, who won his one-on-one battle against Jaguars cornerback Antonio Dennard.
Taylor finished the day seven-of-nine for 139 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. His second touchdown came on a check down to undrafted rookie running back Bobby Rainey. Rainey eluded a defender and ran 48 yards down the field for a score.
Rainey finished the game with three catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.
Baltimore's 48 points scored is the most its scored in a preseason game in the history of the franchise.
