Sparano became the Jets' scapegoat as quarterback Mark Sanchez had his worst season in four years with the organization. In addition, the quarterback controversy between Sanchez, Tim Tebow and Greg McElroy became chaotic, which contributed to a poor season amidst better expectations.
Jets coach Rex Ryan was not fired after the season, but Sparano joins former general manager Mike Tannenbaum and quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh as those let go from the organization.
"I want somebody with the same type of belief I have," Ryan said at his press conference Tuesday morning.
Former Chargers head coach Norv Turner has already been rumored as a possible candidate for the now-open Jets offensive coordinator position.
Sparano previously coached the Miami Dolphins from 2008-2011 before being fired from that position. This was only his season with the Jets.
